I just want to say to everyone complaining about not having ATT service close to places of interest (especially the fool by the naturally history museum) thinking you'll have better service at a place where there are always a lot of people is highly misguided. The more people in an area, the higher the load on the network and the worse the reception.

Lately almost every single call: drops, then drops, then drops. I know there's interference from 60 Hudson with all the dishes, etc... . but this is getting unbearable. Calls never drop outside or other locations.

Exceptional service and reception. Occasionally even holds onto service in the elevator going down 14 floors. Absolutely amazing. I have friends with T-Mobile and AT&T service that frequently complain about reception issues or dropped calls. Thankfully, I can't relate. Unfortunately Verizon service isn't cheap, and the phones are generally considered pathetic. I'd gladly drop Verizon if a competitor offered lower rates with similar service, but that hasn't happened yet.

Outdoors on the sidewalk there are 1-2 bars, sometimes up to 3. But in our 4th floor apartment there is barely enough signal to send a text message when you are hanging out the window. It has been a hellish year living with a phone you have to go outside to use. When I hear my phone ring and see who it is, I am filled with rage that I can't answer the call. Verizon said there was nothing they could do, so we're both switching to AT&T. I hear Verizon is better in general but I need my phone to work where I LIVE.

Reception and call quality are amazing with the BB Curve on Verizon Wireless. I think it's function of both the phone and network though. Though I got pretty good reception and call quality with a Motorola Q9M before also on VZW, they're even better on the Blackberry Curve. I'm still lusting after the iPhone 3G though but have had an awful experience with AT&T on the first iPhone, so going back to AT&T is just out of the question.

Dont know if its the phone itself or Verizon doing something with there coverage. I had a Samsung before and would get good service indoors. Whenever I'm anywhere other than in the dorms, I have great reception, but if I'm anywhere in my dorms, especially in my room, my signal goes from 5 bars to 0 and drops the call. There is no reason to it, I can be sitting in the same place and not move an inch, and it just loses the signal. I actually have better reception in the elevator than anywhere else in the dorms! However, any other place that I've been, Verizon has excellent service. Which is why it's so frustrating not having any in my place of residence!

Switched to Cingular and for past has been AMAZING signals everywhere including Penn Station great officer prices, more important rollover minutes Verizon could care less about it's customers... p.s. customer service and technicians beyond rude and obnoxious all they know is "can you hear me now" dah not for long many friends of mine are having similar issues and are switching to other carriers once their contract expires.

I'm in a third floor apartment, and when I'm in my bedroom (with windows near the outside), it's usually decent, arouns 3 bars. Anytime I go more to the interior of the building (i.e. away from windows), I lose calls and barely get reception. On the street around the Columbia area though, reception is generally great. Nearly every call is lost within seconds. Phone shows maximum bars for signal strength, but there seem to be too few circuits to actually handle a call when it comes in or goes out and then the phone searches for and switches to a tower too far away. Result: the call is dropped. Same thing happens to others in this area. "Can you hear me now?"... (silence)...

I cant believe Verizon says it has the best network in NYC. I cant get service in my office on the 35th floor while Cingular's service is very good.. I gotta switch to Cingular 'cause they are much better on the upper floors.. they must be doing something to target the higher floors that the other carriers arent.. If you work on a skyscraper, get a Cingular phone, your only chance it will work all the time..

I should have got a pager. Spotty variable reception. When most calls come in they are lost within ten to twenty seconds. Lousy reception due to overtaxed circuits in this area. The phone will show a good signal (5 bars) until you try to use it. Because the circuits are actually filled to capacity the network then switches you to an antenna further away almost as soon as you are receiving or making call, you get 1 bar or less and the call is lost. *************************************** Verizon Spokes-Dork: "Can you hear me now?" Verizon Customer: "Huh?" Verizon Spokes-Dork: "Good."

In general, Verizon works just about everywhere. Only the very rare signal loss. Also excellent service up and down east coast of US.

Great reception overall on the East Side. Works great in Central Park including the transverses (unlike T-Mobile and Cingular). Only downfall is that my phone doesn't work in my elevator (which no carriers do in my building anyway). In addition, Verizion Wireless works great in other parts of the country as well.

Verizon has the best service! most of my friends have T-Mobile and Cingular and have at the most 2 bars! veerizon also needs to offer more features that T-Mobile and Cingular phones offer! I suggest you get a tri-mode phone for NYC.

The cellphone reception varies dramatically, one minute all bars, the next minute dead. Call me paranoid, but I would think that with the UN and all the embassies nearby it's not Verizon's fault the signal is killed...

Verizon covers New York well. They also cover subway platforms which alone makes them worth while. The technology may be behind but they work hard to get things well covered in the city and you'll find a lot of people who actually live in the city, as opposed to commuters or newcomers, carry verizon.

"Can you hear me now?"... HUH? "Can you hear me now?"... click! Phones near Penn Station show perfect signal strength with full bars, but Verizon drops calls consistently after a few seconds. Same (worse) with a Samsung SCH-a310, Motorola V60, etc. It's not the phones, it's the Verizon network. The signal falls to one bar at random. It seems Verizon's antenna nearby does not have anywhere near enough circuits to handle the volume near Penn Station, hence strong signals and dropped calls. The commercials are 100% on target, all you can ever say on a Verizon phone around here is, "Can you hear me now?"

I've only had Verizon for a little over a month, but my experience has been good so far. Just switched from TMobile, which also had good reception, just a lousy selection of phones. I bought the phone in CA and migrated here to NY. Perfect reception in both places, even in elevators. No static, no dropped calls. I especially like the fact that no matter where you go in the US, you're not roaming.

Up until recently, reception and call quality has usually been fine. For the past couple of days, however, I have been experiencing dropped calls (irrespective of the location of the person with whom I'm talking). When I look at the reception meter, the number of bars fluctuates quickly from 2 to 5. Could this all be a function of a failing battery? I've had the same battery for a couple of years.

Just changed my old Motorola V60c (brilliant) after 2.5 years. Verizon reception perfect everywhere, can even take it in the bathroom. Just got this weekend Motorola V265 and had to change it after 48 hours - no sound, bad connection, static and dropping calls. Second new V265 brilliant - so far! Verizon is the best - with AT+T my partner has to hang outside my apartment window to get even one bar!

I was shocked at how good my reception is with Verizon in NYC. I get an excellent signal everywhere, including most subway platforms and elevators in buildings. Maybe it has more to do with the phone than the service. I have a Motorola V60i from a few years ago that still works perfectly despite fairly heavy use.

Problem is in my apt. Phone will cut out for no reason. I used to have an Audiovox phone which was perfect. Used it for about 5 years until it started giving me problems turning it on. Had no problems until then and had perfect service in elevators, the subway, etc. Have always had Verizon and find they have the best coverage; I blame the phone I got from them recently for the sporadic cut-outs.

Got Verizon in April and the signal was perfect. Worked in some subway stations too. Now, a month later has very intermittant service anywhere near the Empire State Building up to W 40th Street along Fifth. The tell me there is nothing in their system that indicates a signal problem. Can't get a signal at my apartment building on W 35th St anymore. :(

Verizon is the way to go in New York city. I have had sprint and AT&T and both pale in comparison to Verizon service. With Verizon I even have reception in subw tunnels sometimes. With Sprint and At&T I had problem getting reception standing in the middle of the street. Do yourself a favor and start with Verizon. Otherwise you have months of frustration and shotty service ahead.
