Nextel
Reception is spotty on the street and nonexistent in my apartment -- I have to keep the phone near the window to get any signal at all. If I leave it on my desk 15 feet away I'll miss calls.

T-Mobile
Horrible reception between 5pm and 8pm. While the calls go through, the quality is extremely distorted and makes having a conversation near impossible.

No reception in basements around this area, Verizon works.

Verizon
Was a Verizon user for over 10 years..had a problem with a phone as soon as I upgraded and Verizon replaced it with a refurbished phone which was worse than my original... long story short Verizon says they are not responsible they do not manuacture the phones CLEARLY their clueless and yes agree with many Penn Station service SUCKS can't get a singal while foreigners are using cell phones from other countries. Switched to Cingular and for past has been AMAZING signals everywhere including Penn Station great officer prices, more important rollover minutes Verizon could care less about it's customers... p.s. customer service and technicians beyond rude and obnoxious all they know is "can you hear me now" dah not for long many friends of mine are having similar issues and are switching to other carriers once their contract expires.

Constant breaking up of signal. TMobile far better.

I work in a building in Manhatten next to the Loews theatre on 19th st. I sometimes, MAYBE get 1 bar, so my phone can ring, but if I try to pick it up I get nothing, but it still wastes my minutes.

Only on very high floors are signals hard to keep, but they can be attained.

Sprint
All around very pleased with the service. It has improved greatly over the years. I rarely get a dropped call and generally have very clear reception. Even works on Shelter Island! This phone has no bells or whistles. The graphics are terrible, no carmera, it is just a phone and it does the job.

Verizon
Verizon is excellent all throughout parts of the city I travel. I have never had a problem with their service. Bar none the best quality in the city. Indoors, outdoors, on some subway platforms, epic coverage.

T-Mobile
Everything I've read about T-Mobile on this site is absolutely correct. I experience all the same issues. I thought it may be just my phone or just me. I get full reception, standing in the same spot, that drops to zero and then drops the call. Does T Mobile have weaker signal strength? I left Verizon for this crap, probably heading back to Verizon. Cool phones are a plus... but only if they work! Verizon needs better phones and T-Mobile needs better service, at least in the US. I got better reception in the niddle of an African safari, no kidding!

T-Mobile
Inside Baruch Campus, T-Mobile and Cingular seem to have the worst service. Nextel and Verizon has the best service so far. Out side the area around 24th st and lexington area, there are many dead zones and that just makes T-Mobile worst. I just use my phone to show off now days around campus because I can't use it to call or receive people.

Sprint
Regular drop-outs... I'm fed up. What I don't understand is this: I drive every day in Manhattan and I know EXACTLY where the drop-out spots are. I always know when to tell the call recipient that I will call him or her back... because we're about to have a "lost call" thanks to Sprint. 79th Between 5th and 3rd. FDR drive just south of Waterside. Etc. It's embarrassing. Can't SPRINT just fix this stuff? It's been years.

Verizon
Switched to Verizon from Sprint about 11 months after moving to an apartment across from Riverside Park. Sprint had dodgy service at best in my apartment, so I had the change carriers. Verizon has been perfect. No dropped calls and I always have a signal (even in the basement laundry room). I only wish Verizon had Sprint's prices... My Cingular b'berry hardly ever works in my apartment. The unit usually has to be held near a window in order to capture a signal.

T-Mobile
T-mobile's coverage is terrible. Outside is ok but once go inside of the bldg. I lose all reception. I used to have Verizon and I didn't have any problem. I should go back to Verizon, but T-mobile's package is much better than Verizon, and don't want to pay penalty for cancellation to T-Mobile 'cause poor reception is their problem, not mine.

Verizon
I literally need to lean on the bedroom window to get 1 bar. No reception throughout the rest of the apartment. Friends with T-Mobile get good reception.

T-Mobile
My phone works pretty well by the windows in the front and back rooms, but not at all in between. I saw a similar comment here from someone on the same street. T Mobile keeps saying theyll send someone to investigate the problem but of course that never happens. Im considering switching to Verizon and telling T Mobile I refuse to pay their cancellation fee due to poor service. But Verizon's rates to text to Europe are so high...

I can't wait until my contract is up because I am definitely leaving cingular. The reception pretty much everywhere is horrible. I live in this area and I consistently get 1 bar on my phone here. It is v difficult to make a phone call or receive one.

Sometimes reception dips to 4 bars but mostly it stays at 5. Much better reception here since I switched to a GSM phone. No dropped calls.

Verizon
Despite 5 bars, in my apartment there are spots where I lose connection and drop calls (19th floor). In elevator or street no problems.

T-Mobile
Despite the number of bars, reception more than 5 feet away from a window results in dropped calls and a horrible connection despite a clear line of sight 40 storeys up with no buildings surrounding me. Connection even while plastered to a window ain't that hot either.

Basement apartment. Other than a couple of "hotspots", no reception while in apartment. OK on the street.

Great reception from the seventh floor and on the street.

Verizon
Even in the basement of my appartment building, I get reasonable receptoin. Very solid everywhere in NYC. Get good reception all over the US and Canada--Miami, Lauderdale, Tampa, St. Augustine, all over Long Island, Dobbs Ferry, NY, Stamford CT, Nova Scotia, LA, San Diego, Frisco, Chicago, St. Louis. Only place I encountered a hole was Mystic, CT (odd). Very good service.

My bedroom is right on Broadway on the 7th floor and the reception is awesome.

I can see a cell phone antennae on top of a building (7 floors tall) from my apartment that are directed right at my apt. I think this is my cell phone tower and explains my excellent reception. The building is on 84ths street about midway between Broadway and Amsterdam. I imagine that if you were on the other side of my building (tall - 23 floors) you would not get any reception from this tower and might explain the poor reception from other users in the area.

Sprint
Ancient Sprint CDMA phone gets excellent reception in my pre-war apartment as well as outside on the street.

T-Mobile
Very good reception at this location with no drop out or call cut-offs. Very pleased with T-Mobile service in general. According to your maps, South of 42nd is not so good, but just a few blocks north of there, it is excellent. My apartment faces south and I always have five bars of reception.

AT&T
As with much of the upper west side, Cingular coverage is a problem, so the signal is either lost or fluctuates wildly with any movement. Perhaps they will add some locations or buy space from Verizon. I am not switching because the Cingular coverage in Florida is much better than Verizon's.
