if I stand directly AT my window or at the front door of the building (i.e. 2" from the street) I have reasonably good (4 bars) reception. if I go inside my apartment (ground floor northern exposure) -- the reception dwindles to 0-2 bars. this is with TDMA and GSM, all Nokia fones via AT&T / Cingular --

Reception was incredible. I also lived at 114th and Amsterdam the year before and reception was great there too. Other than customer service, Verizon is the way to go.

I just got a new phone, but I used to have the LGVX 4400. Both have had average reception in my building. I'm in a third floor apartment, and when I'm in my bedroom (with windows near the outside), it's usually decent, arouns 3 bars. Anytime I go more to the interior of the building (i.e. away from windows), I lose calls and barely get reception. On the street around the Columbia area though, reception is generally great. I can get reception anywhere on campus, even in elevators.

I get very good reception if I sit on the left side of my couch (faces west). However, calls have dropped while in front of my building.

Switched to Cingular from Verizon due to rollover and family plan features. Had AT&T back in 2000 and sales rep assured me that coverage had been upgraded to "equivalent to Verizon". Trust me, Cingular service if definitely inferior. I can't tell you how many dropped calls all across the city. Besides obvious places, (elevators etc) this happened to me so rarely with Verizon. Now it happens daily with Cingular. And call clarity is far inferior to Verizon. Also, my apt has unobstructed west view but I can't make calls from my apt now due to spotty reception and numerous dropped calls. Never a problem with Verizon. Phone says 5 bars but then drops call, goes to 1 bar, then 10 secs later says 5 bars again.. all while standing in 1 spot! Another annoying fact is the annoying touch tone delay. When dialing in voicemail passwds, when you punch in #'s, there is a latency in the phone registering the touch tones (5-10 secs?). Never had that issue with Verizon which recognizes instantaneously like a land line. Only good thing is rollover and family plan. Coverage is so bad though that I rely on my work issued Verizon phone to make important calls so that I can hear call and not get dropped.

Great reception outdoors, no problems or dropouts at all. Indoor reception is almost non existent. If I stay in my room that has 2 windows facing the back and open area the reception is fine. As soon as I walk toward my living room and away from windows, the conversation starts to drop out and eventually cuts out.

I usually have poor voice quality with lots of dropouts, and the occasional lost call. This is fairly consistent for Verizon throughout NYC, with some midtown and Upper East Side locations having no service available at rush hour. They have told me it's the phone, but then replaced it, with identical results. Poor.

I have come to termes with the fact that cell phones are not land lines, but I do love that T mobile is working on there sevice. I know this because I have been a customer for 5 years now and I have seen and heard the differences. I know that with the addition of javascript on their sidekicks now it will be hard to compete with t mobile!

Nearly every call is lost within seconds. Phone shows maximum bars for signal strength, but there seem to be too few circuits to actually handle a call when it comes in or goes out and then the phone searches for and switches to a tower too far away. Result: the call is dropped. Same thing happens to others in this area. "Can you hear me now?"... (silence)...

Great reception in my pre-war building. Maybe in part because I'm on the top floor. Or perhaps I'm getting irradiated from a nearby tower. It's good to be the king!

I have terrible reception in my apartment and consistently have 2-3 dropped calls during a single conversation. Elsewhere in the city, reception is spotty. I started with AT&T and was switched to Cingular. Things haven't improved under the new carrier.

I only have reliable reception in my bedroom. I don't have a landline, so this is a major pain. I used to have T-Mobile and the reception was even worse, so I don't want to change again.

four bars don't mean a thing - frequent dropouts - plus about every fourth syllable lost - typically get a plea from the other party to please switch to land line - used to have ATT TDMA which was far better - also bookkeeping is not good - signed up for online billing and rarely get notification of bill due until message comes that payment is OVERdue - looking forward to contract end.

Had Sprint years ago - no reception - switched to Verizon 5 years ago - very few reception problems since. The LG 8000, while large, gives good reception (also has a faily low SAR of 85) - Main negative no Bluetooth.
