I work in a building in Manhatten next to the Loews theatre on 19th st. I sometimes, MAYBE get 1 bar, so my phone can ring, but if I try to pick it up I get nothing, but it still wastes my minutes.
All around very pleased with the service. It has improved greatly over the years. I rarely get a dropped call and generally have very clear reception. Even works on Shelter Island! This phone has no bells or whistles. The graphics are terrible, no carmera, it is just a phone and it does the job.
Verizon is excellent all throughout parts of the city I travel. I have never had a problem with their service. Bar none the best quality in the city. Indoors, outdoors, on some subway platforms, epic coverage.
Everything I've read about T-Mobile on this site is absolutely correct. I experience all the same issues. I thought it may be just my phone or just me. I get full reception, standing in the same spot, that drops to zero and then drops the call. Does T Mobile have weaker signal strength? I left Verizon for this crap, probably heading back to Verizon. Cool phones are a plus... but only if they work! Verizon needs better phones and T-Mobile needs better service, at least in the US. I got better reception in the niddle of an African safari, no kidding!
Inside Baruch Campus, T-Mobile and Cingular seem to have the worst service. Nextel and Verizon has the best service so far. Out side the area around 24th st and lexington area, there are many dead zones and that just makes T-Mobile worst. I just use my phone to show off now days around campus because I can't use it to call or receive people.
Regular drop-outs... I'm fed up. What I don't understand is this: I drive every day in Manhattan and I know EXACTLY where the drop-out spots are. I always know when to tell the call recipient that I will call him or her back... because we're about to have a "lost call" thanks to Sprint. 79th Between 5th and 3rd. FDR drive just south of Waterside. Etc. It's embarrassing. Can't SPRINT just fix this stuff? It's been years.
Switched to Verizon from Sprint about 11 months after moving to an apartment across from Riverside Park. Sprint had dodgy service at best in my apartment, so I had the change carriers. Verizon has been perfect. No dropped calls and I always have a signal (even in the basement laundry room). I only wish Verizon had Sprint's prices... My Cingular b'berry hardly ever works in my apartment. The unit usually has to be held near a window in order to capture a signal.
T-mobile's coverage is terrible. Outside is ok but once go inside of the bldg. I lose all reception. I used to have Verizon and I didn't have any problem. I should go back to Verizon, but T-mobile's package is much better than Verizon, and don't want to pay penalty for cancellation to T-Mobile 'cause poor reception is their problem, not mine.
I literally need to lean on the bedroom window to get 1 bar. No reception throughout the rest of the apartment. Friends with T-Mobile get good reception.
