My phone rarely works properly. It will ring, but I often cannot hear the other person at all. I had to start using Skype in my apartment.

Most places in Manhattan the reception is great. In my apartment, mediocre at best. Enough to still make calls most of the time, but sometimes the service will just drop out for an hour for no discernable reason.

Service is spectacular. I get the full 5 bars of service everywhere I go. Whether it's in an elevator, the basement or the 8th floor. I have never gotten any dropped calls in the area and the calls I make are clear and perfect. I am always traveling around manhatten and the serivce remains the same; wonderful. I frequently travel in the MTA subway service. I take the 1 train and the 7 train to and from the area. I get 3 or 4 bars underground at 66th street going home. I get perfect service on 59th street, still in the train. I get 1 or 2 bars under 50th street and then I lose service at 42nd street times square. The same consists when I am traveling to manhatten. Compared to my friends with other cellphone services, I am always the one with the amazing Cingular service. Cingular has flawless service wherever I go in the manhatten area and has never let me down. There service is very reliable and I think it is the best out there. I never had any problems and I recommend their service to anyone.

Switched to Verizon from Sprint about 11 months after moving to an apartment across from Riverside Park. Sprint had dodgy service at best in my apartment, so I had the change carriers. Verizon has been perfect. No dropped calls and I always have a signal (even in the basement laundry room). I only wish Verizon had Sprint's prices... My Cingular b'berry hardly ever works in my apartment. The unit usually has to be held near a window in order to capture a signal.

Apartment on 34th floor is never better than 3 bars, and often there is no signal at all. Sometimes a call can be started with a useable signal, and then the signal goes to zero and the call is dropped while in progress. Worse at high traffic times.

Very erratic coverage inside our apartment building. Movement of 1 meter (3 feet) in any direction would change the reception from 3 bars to none. Occasionally, the reception would plummet even while standing still. In other areas (e.g., Columbia University area) the reception was good, even inside the buildings.

Switched to Cingular from Verizon due to rollover and family plan features. Had AT&T back in 2000 and sales rep assured me that coverage had been upgraded to "equivalent to Verizon". Trust me, Cingular service if definitely inferior. I can't tell you how many dropped calls all across the city. Besides obvious places, (elevators etc) this happened to me so rarely with Verizon. Now it happens daily with Cingular. And call clarity is far inferior to Verizon. Also, my apt has unobstructed west view but I can't make calls from my apt now due to spotty reception and numerous dropped calls. Never a problem with Verizon. Phone says 5 bars but then drops call, goes to 1 bar, then 10 secs later says 5 bars again.. all while standing in 1 spot! Another annoying fact is the annoying touch tone delay. When dialing in voicemail passwds, when you punch in #'s, there is a latency in the phone registering the touch tones (5-10 secs?). Never had that issue with Verizon which recognizes instantaneously like a land line. Only good thing is rollover and family plan. Coverage is so bad though that I rely on my work issued Verizon phone to make important calls so that I can hear call and not get dropped.

I used to be an AT&T Wireless customer for almost 8 years until Cingular took over the company. I have to say that during the blackout of 2003. I had no problems using my AT&T Wireless mobile (GSM tri band), while most other people using other carriers couldn't even use their phones. After I switched over to Cingular, the reception has been good to excellent throughout Manhattan and the rest of the city. I have yet to experience any dead spots
