Sometime between July 4th 2011 and July 11th, AT&T lit up phone and 3G data service on a tower about halfway down the bluff. Call reception in the surrounding area went from acceptable to very good. Data went from pathetic edge (barely usable in many places) to solid 3G with download and upload speeds consistently above 1 mbps and downloads of about 1.8-2.2 mbps in most places I tried. I did lose 3G in places in the villiage of Penn Yan, but it was solid on the water and further south from Morgans to the Switz.

Just north of Penn Yan on State Route 14A there is a very bad "dead" spot for Verizon. Cingular isn't much better according their subscibers that I have spoken to. The dead spot consumes an approximate radius of 5 miles in all directions. It may appear as though you have reception however the call will drop shortly after connection. Several complaints have been made to Verizon and they even received approval from the town to piggy back off another tower in Benton Center. During our most recent contact with the town board it was revealed that Verizon does not consider this a problem area, therefore, there is no urgency in getting on the tower!

A long stretch of Rt. 364 in Penn Yan gets no reception in the town of potter. You always see cars sitting on the side of the road just outside this area because they FINALLY got a signal. If you search A T and T's own map of reception it clearly shows moderate reception. That is false. You get no reception for many miles.

I am visiting friends in the states and bought a sim card to stay in touch with friends back in the UK. I received no reception whatsoever.
