I have had Verizon for a few years and live right next to RPI. Their service has been the most consistent. I have many friends who have other services such as T-Mobile and they cannot get reception inside buildings. Also, bear in mind that reception is really highly dependent on the type of phone you get with your carrier. If you get one of those phones with an internal antenna, you're most likely to get less reception than a phone with an external antenna. With all this in mind, Verizon still seems to have the best coverage and quality of calls in this area.

Upper Hoosic St. is probably the best place for Sprint / VM coverage. It's always 2 bars, Data is pretty good, It's not verizon, but it's $27 a month, trade off. I'm sure an upgrade to ICS would speed things along with the phone (there's been complaints with the Triumphs reception, but I thought it came from people "demanding perfection regardless of price" or their turtlenecks were too tight.) I'll tell you this you won't beat VM for the price, but there's trade offs. I haven't found any phone from any service that touched me in all the right places in this area code, and I've manged to have them all in the last 20 or so years. I got 4 bars with this set up once, but I was on the to deck of a dinner cruise ship on lake Champlain.

Despite some of the comments I have seen in this forum, I decided to try my T-Mobile service in Troy, NY. Now, I find that it has decent service in and around RPI. It may sometimes show only 2 bars, but did not drop a call. I can make a call from my office in the basement at RPI, while a lot of my colleagues have to go out to the corridor to get a good signal. I have decided to stay with it because it is better than most of the other services I have seen.

Avergage to minimum reception in streets. No reception within buildings. Although Cingular seems to be the best preformer in this area compared to the others especially verizon.

My Phone works best in the middle of my apartment but is very sp o t y. I wouldn't recommend T-Mobile at all if you live in Troy on or near the RPI campus. In downtown it is spotty as well but does work better than in my apartment. C.mon T-Mobile put some more antennas on the water tower or RPI's light towers on their football field.

Cedar Park Apartments / Massachusetts Ave. / 15th St., Troy, NY 12180 Mon Aug 14, 2006

Poor reception in most areas inside the apartment. I've had about 65% of my calls dropped in the last 12 months. Sometimes I won't even receive the calls while in the apartment and will get voicemail notices. Full bars to no service depending on how I stand and whether it's two steps this way or that. Works better while I'm away from the window but not too far into the apartment either.

Although T-Mobile claims to cover Troy, and technically they do, as you travel around Troy, and especially around RPI campus, reception will drastically cut in and out, going dead more often than not. In two of my three apartments so far I have never been able to get a single call out, with the third coming up at no to an iffy 2 at times.

Dropped calls 20% of time or mire. 1-2 bars most time if lucky. 3G mode works sometimes then E kicks in Please fix this problem AT&T. Right across from rpi tech park - most powerful computer in the world. Hmmmm. Maybe that's the issue?

When I walk into my building my calls drop. There's a pile of them right next to the door. You'd think standing in the show window that faces the cell tower would work, but no. On the sidewalk outside, I get 2 more bars but calls still sometimes drop. Verizon was no problem, I could walk through the building and talk. With AT&T I have to be on the sidewalk. And I've switched all my business calls over to the cell because Verizon was so great.

Indoors, usually 1 bar, but if you find the right spot, you may be lucky to get 2 bars. Outdoors, a steady 2 bars, 3 if all the planets are aligned properly...

Extremely poor reception. Phone calls are dropped left and right. Service is non-existent at my house. When I leave the eastside and go to another part of the city, I end up having numerous voive mails because my service is so bad on the eastside.

Just got a Boost mobile phone the other day. My husband has had one and no problems. I started getting error messages and no network the other day. I called Boost they say there is damage to a tower that also services Sprint. I thought by today would be fixed. I called back, they say restoration is tommorow.
