What I've found with years with T-Mobile is if you travel in rural areas, get a quadband phone. It picks up more frequencies so if T-Mobile isn't in that area, it will actually pick up frequency from Cell One or Cingular which doesn't cost you anything more. I have used US Cellular in the past but find that with the quadband and tmobile, there is better access in rural areas which seems to be where I usually end up at.

Switched to Cingular GSM from ATT GSM(due to merge) I used a Sony Erricson T616 for 2 yrs and had a "good" signal in this area (T616 has a well known poor reception) bought a Motorola V551 in an upgrade and the signal is extremely poor (Cricket works better out here... lol). I don't know if it's the phone or Cingular's network. All I know is ATT GSM worked fine and Cingular's doesn't.

Just switched from TDMA to GSM on Cingular. The old TDMA phone reception was almost always fine but my GSM phone seems to cut out a bit more. So far, I would say it's about average quality. Nothing special certainly, but good enough that I won't change carriers.
