During peak hours, maybe 9am to 8 pm I regulary have to turn 3g off to make calls or get data. Otherwise calls fail, are dropped, and Internet is nonresponsive. The iPhone is awesome, but the coverage is the worst I've ever had in 10+ years with a cellphone.
Consistently get between 1-2 bars. My phone probably sucks too (even though it's about 1 yr old), but my calls drop all the time. If it doesn't drop, then my voice or my caller's voice drops out. Based on the locations of cell towers in N. Portland, it's obvious no company wants to invest in the St. John's / Cathedral Park area. Too much government-supported housing? What gives?!
This is my first phone, and it works okay, but it's often hard to make out what people are saying unless I'm in a completely quiet room. I would say about 1:20 or 1:25 calls are dropped (I don't make that many calls, so it's not that bothersome.)
Full bars on my new Nokia e71. I think there are 7 bars on this thing, and all 7 are lit up. Granted, I am right next to the Fire Station and they have a ton of towers all around them. I just got the "PDA Personal" "Pay as you Go" data plan with unlimited data, no phone minutes (its extra for that). Its $35.00 per month plus ~$5.00 in taxes. I can do Skype in place of a phone plan with them. I can also add text minutes, if I want, which I do not. I will be entering more cell reception reviews for the local area (Banks, OR tonight - trip to the midwest in the next month).
AT&T sucks as much here in the zip code of 97229 (NW Portland, Rock Creek, OR - Tanasbourne) over to zip code 97217 (Swan Island, Portland, OR). I get 1-2 bars, and then it will just go to "SOS" mode with no bars. It used to work better last year. Due to it getting worse rather than better I would say that AT&T is CHOOSING to have their reception be worse. I am getting rid of this phone, and AT&T as we speak. I am going back to Verizon, or a WiFi Skype phone.
Terrible service – about 95% of the calls are dropped. Even though the phone shows several bars most (good signal), the calls are dropped constantly. You will not be able to finish a 10 minute call without getting dropped. I am on Caxton Lane in Forest Heights.
I just switched from Nokia 6102i phones (2G network) to Nokia 6650 phones (3G network). Inside the condo, the reception used to be Good to Perfect. Now, I have very poor reception. I get "Connection Errors" even with four or five bars, and calls to me often go to voicemail. One tower has had a severely degraded signal since I reported the problems two weeks ago. AT&T indicated that they were going to construct more towers, but who knows when. I can't force my phones to 2G, so may return them within 30 days and shop for another carrier.
My phone NEVER works in this area (I live here). If it says I have reception, and I attempt to make the call, it either doesn't go through or the call immediately gets dropped.
