Got this phone originally since it was essentially free for work. Should have known better, even though I am not paying for it in monetary terms--you can't even make a call. I would say on a daily basis 75% of calls are dropped, or I am not able to call because of the reception. Luckly I have another phone that is Verizon, and it works just fine. It is kind of ironic that I have to use my Verizon phone to call ATT / cingular and complain. I would say the excuse that they use that "Oregon is a new state that hasn't been upgraded to GSM" is a line. If they wanted to upgrade their infrastructure they could, but they choose not to. Not being able to get reception in the middle of a city is insane, I mean we are not talking about a remote location. The commercials for ATT / Cingular are hilarious---"more bars everywhere"--talk about funny. They need to get with the program---since their rep is essentially in the toilet from most people that I have talked to. If you want to be able to use your minutes get Verizon, for Cingular you can get the 50 minutes a month plan and not have to worry about going over... since you will never be able to call anyone.

Ever since Cingular swallowed ATT, my cell phone service has been awful. Dropped calls. Low bars. Can't even get good reception in my own home. I'm switching.

This is my third phone and first with t-mobile. I hated ATT / Cingular and Sprint believed my entire home except for a corner of my kitchen was a roaming area. So far so good with this one. Reception is excellent to ok just about everywhere I have used it in Portland. No dropped calls. Phone is the cheapy that comes free. T-Mobile has been good about service too

While slightly better than before the ATT-Cingular merger the reception here is lame. Calls are frequently dropped insinde and outside. I rarely get more than 3-4 bars. Usually 1-2

Horrible! As many have stated, it oscilates from no reception to 5 bars minute to minute. A conversation beyond 3 minutes is a rare treat. It used to be even worse... as I couldn't even use it at home, but now I can make short calls. I have a 2 year contract, or I would CERTAINLY SWITCH> I've been forced to use Vonage broadband telephone service in order to have a reliable line at home. AT&T / Cingular simply abuses customers in North Portland. If there were any justice from the FCC, an investigation would be pending or class action would be under way. The service is so poor that I would call it fraud, as I'm in an urban area, their coverage map is well beyond my home, and it is virtually unuseable for more than a "walkie-talkie" type service.

Used to live downtown and had perfect reception everywhere I went... now that I've moved into SE I literally have to leave my house, and usually the neighborhood to have a decent conversation! I'm so frustrated. Now... do I switch to Cingular and hope reception improves... or shell out $175 and run to TMobile (my sister lives with me and has perfect reception throughout the house)????

W. Burnside Rd. / Barnes Rd., Portland, OR 97210 Wed Mar 02, 2005

Where I work is located where Barnes / Burnside meet, we went with AT&T due to the reception, however now that the GSM's are being fazed out and the TDMA's introducted, the reception in the GSM is garbage. I will more than likely switch myself and my staff over to TDMA. I don't think it will make the reception driving down Burnside, going through the tunnel, etc. any better as there are no cell towers along that stretch.

ATT is worse by far since the "merge" with Cingular! Phones (all 3) all sound like under water, static, with lots of variance in signal strength, even while standing still. All over the Portland metro area. ATT says its the phone, not the tower, but that idea is blown by the fact of using 3 different phones and it happens to all. Everyone (100%) of all ATT users I have spoken with all say service / reception is way worse in last 3-4 months, since the Cingular / ATT merger started... Verizon and Nextel seem to be best all around in this area.

Phone hardly works. I'll have 3 bars until I hit send, then I get one. If I accidentally hold my hand over the antenna it drops the call. First had TDMA service with ATT and service was bad, then switched to GSM thinking better and I think its actually worse. Don't know what to do, maybe booster for inhouse. Thinking about getting house phone again (haven't in 5 years) just so I can have a normal conversation that doesn't require 3-5 callbacks.

Since relocating from the Midwest, we've concluded that our lousey reception and dropped calls must be blamed on the terrain in the Portland area. I've talked to a good number of people with various cell phone plans and providers and no one is satisfied with their reception and of course, the crappy customer service is rampant. We were going to dump our landline at home, but cell phones just aren't reliable enought to count on in an emergency.

Reception vacillates constantly. Goes from full bars down to none and the call gets dropped. This has gotten much worse since ATT and Cingular merged. Seems to go on approximately 10 minute cycle, although this is not regular. Basically unacceptable. When Renew time comes we will drop Cingular unless something changes drastically.

Reliability deteriorating over last several months. For several years service was fair with calls dropped 1-2x in hills between Hollywood and Garden Home. Currently, January 05, calls are dropping 3-4x all along same route. Coverage outside PDX has been variable; Anacortes, Lincoln City, Bend OK; Santa Clara / San Jose even worse than PDX.

Moved here from San Francisco, always saw spotty coverage in the valleys and sometimes house. Since moving to Portland, see major drop in reception in the NE area. At the house we are not getting any calls and voice mail doesn't even show up til outside of house.

Reception has been below average since we moved here a year ago, but all of a sudden has dropped to poor... we cannot dial to or receive calls from our house as of a week or so ago. AT&T says there is no known problem in the area.

I used to have no reception at all inside my 2nd story Portland apartment. Since GSM, I got service everywhere. In the apartment outside of Motorola, at the river, even at my mom's house 10 miles south of Bandon. Then ATT & T and Cingular became one, reception sucks, and 1/3 of my calls are dropped. This sucks.
