Very little or no GSM reception inside most buidings. Absolutely no reception inside the St. Johns Fred Meyers store. New battery lasts less than 24 hrs due to increased power drain (because phone is always boosting weak signal or trying to find a signal). Everyone I know with a GSM AT&T phone who visits North Metro Portland experiences these same problems. I switched from Verizon due to their lack of Bluetooth support, but now I really miss their fantastic coverage (my Verizon CDMA Kerocera worked EVERYWHERE, even basements).

If I'm within 6 inches of my window, I can usually make calls. If not, everything goes to voice mail and I get a notification up to 2 hours later. If I walk a block in either direction, I get 6-7 bars (7 is max on the 6800).

TDMA signal is weak and often drops in my home near South end of John's Landing area, but this otherwise has been a very good service with good coverage. No billing or customer service issues. Works well nationally, in many countries of the Caribbean, in Mexico, and in the puckerbrush of rural eastern Oregon and Idaho.

I was a customer of AT&T for many years before they rolled out the GSM network. The TDMA reception was not the greatest where I lived (Mountain Park / Westlake / SW PDX near PCC) and AT&T told me how their GSM network would solve the bad reception problems. So I switched to their GSM service and that was a HUGE mistake. The coverage is terrible to begin with and the reception was horrible if it even existed. Most of the time when I was at home, there was no signal. To get any kind of signal I would have to walk around outside and stop as soon as there was some kind of reception. I have used the Nokia 7210, 3300, 8310 (I think that's the model) and the NEC 525. NONE of them had any better reception than the other, even though I was told by AT&T and the cell manufacturers that this model has better reception or that model has better reception. It's all a bunch of crap, the problem is the GSM network and the West Hills. It seems that any cell provider that I have tried has some issues with the West Hills, even if I'm standing 10 feet from a cell tower? Explain that one someone. I am currently on the Verizon Network and have a little better luck than when I was on the AT&T GSM network. But, when I'm at home or even near my home, I have to switch my Verizon (Motorola T730) phone into analog mode or it will drop calls or not connect while dialing. In digital mode at home, even if the reception meter is COMPLETELY FULL, it drops calls or won't dial out.

Very poor reception just off Highway 26. I have signal strength of 1-2 bars but phone will not ring or make a call. Very frustrating. Zero GSM service.

NE 15th / Fremont, Portland, OR 97212 Fri May 07, 2004

From NE Fremont to NE Alberta and MLK to 39th, it appears to be a near dead zone. Reception is very bad and I get lots of dropped calls. I get one bar in my house and two bars outside. The signal often switches to analog as well. Very unhappy with this poor coverage since I use the mobile primarily to make long distance calls from home.

AT&T's GSM network is worthless. In the west hills there is zero reception. It only starts to work somewhat when you get into downtown and off the west hills. Do not use this service! I switched to AT&T's TDMA and have been very pleased with the service. Also, TDMA phones have analog roaming, which means you can make 911 calls, etc. in the country.

AT&T's TDMA network is excellent in that it offers fairly good to good signal strength in the entire portland area, and exceptional converage (in comparison too all other carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) in the west hills. Also has good coverage around the state. These phone roam on other carriers so you are likely to be able to make a call out in the country. Other networks such as Cingular, T-Mobile, and AT&T's GSM, and Verizons's "All-Digital" phones, do not roam on other networks. This means that if you need to make a 911 call and are in the country you may not be able to make it. These AT&T plans also offer the most minutes of any of the companies (650 min. for $39.99). I reccommend it in the metro area, but, in general, pay the 36 dollar activation fee to avoid a 2-year contract, It's just not worth it.

I lose calls when I hit around 20th and Belmont and have absolutely nothing (can't make or receive calls or SMS-nothing) until I hit around 35th. Then I get poor service, not no service.

Man, AT&T have some terrible coverage here in Portland. I get dropped calls every day all the time. I know that an antenna is 10 blocks away and have no idea what their problem is. I get 1-2 bars then jumps to 4 then back to none within the same minute. Alien interferrence? I shall move to Verizon or t-Mobile very soon.
