The absolute worst reception is here at home. Elsewhere, it's pretty good.

I work downtown Portland on the top floor of a building along SW 6th Ave. Starting September 1st 2004, I get dropped calls every day receiving and sending calls from within the building where I work. Middle of conversation and suddenly call is dropped. Meter reads 3 bars; yet call is dropped. Other times, I get 1-2 bars then jumps to 4-5 bars then back to 0 bars (and "no reception" message) - all within the same minute. But if I go outside the building, reception is OK - 3-4 bars. A few dropped calls. The first 45-days, reception was great. No problems. No dropped calls at all. Indoors or outdoors. But starting September 1st 2004, something changed on AT&T Wireless' GSM. Brand new Motorola T721 phone in mid-July 2004. I have purchased a new battery (on AT&T Wireless Customer Care recommendation). Phone still drops calls from inside the office where I work. And I do charge phone overnight and then use battery until drained. Then, recharge overnight. (Normally, Fridays the battery is low; so Friday nights, I charge battery overnight and begin anew Saturday)

I've found that no matter what time of the day it is, when passing through the Sellwood neighborhood, I'd be lucky to retain a call. I'd have to say that 9 out of 10 calls would be dropped if not all of them. And ones not dropped, would become garbled. And this was with two bars on the reception meter. Yet I could send and receive calls from work which was an older building made of concrete. Go figure.

It is hard to accept the fact that my cell phones from 5 years ago work much better than my new one on AT&T GSM plan. My family is so fustrated that we have learned the art of understanding a conversation by only hearing every other word. Terrible....

Reception is really poor on the entire West Coast. And really annoying - even if you have 4 bars, you can't hear or be heard in the conversation. Best feature: Call forwarding. Need to change contract in November...

I like many people have been getting more insistent $50 credit offers to sign up for another year from AT&T (and of course they won't let you upgrade to a better calling plan without a new commitment either). My Nokia 8265 TDMA gets OK reception, which may go fuzzy in most of my 1/2 basement bedroom, but no problems in most places. I got an offer in the mail for $110 off a new phone (basically free after another $20 mail in rebate) and since I wanted to upgrade to free long distance, free nights & weekends, and 200 more minutes for the same monthly price thought it might be worth the 2 year commitment. Big mistake. This is day one and it's going back tomorrow. It's completely useless anywhere in my house, outside of my house or up the street. No signal at all inside, the phone may have up to 5 out of 7 strength outside and drop to 0 instantly. The service doesn't have the 'hi are you there, OK I can hear you again' during bad signal - it immediately hangs up on you. I attempted to make my first phone call, after redialing 10 times after being hung up on even after walking several blocks this phone is going back tomorrow. If they are phasing out TDMA I will be phasing out AT&T because GSM is unuseable here (and for now they better put my account back the way it was).

Coverage is spotty and unreliable. My service and phone are 5 days old, and they only work adequately about 50-60% of the time. I might be on the phone for 10 minutes, then dial up a second call and all of a sudden it's "Emergency Only." Even though I haven't moved physically, all of a sudden the service is out. I just got off the phone with tech support (after an hour's worth of waiting and talking) and the best they could do was apologize and say "I might get a call back."
