Ive been in State College for 3 years now and just recently got Verizon and I have full service no matter where I am, even in every building house everywhere. I had AT&T until last month and same thing, I had full service everywhere, State college in my experience has full service everywhere now

Reception is very good here in State College, but the towers aren't officially T-Mobile, they're Conestoga. Normally this wouldn't make a difference but you can't use T-Zones (T-Mobile's Wireless Internet) here because it's not supported through Conestoga.

In my apartment (Cricklewood), Nextel is the only one of the major carriers (Cingular, Verizon, TMobile) to get usable reception, ie. more than 1 bar. I previously had Cingular, and ~90% of the time in my apartment my phone would have no service, whereas now with Nextel I have 3-4 bars consistently and full reception outside in the parking lot.

This a roaming area for T-Mobile customers (no T-zones)! So, If you have free roaming there shouldn't be any problems. Overall my Sharp TM150 works well here and picks up good signals from Immix Wireless and AT&T (on campus). There is a dead spot on 26 between the 322 bypass and the mall where I've lost calls a few times. I used to have non-GSM Cingular and hated it. Now I'm pretty much in love with T-mobile. I would rate T-Mobile in this area as average GSM since you use the same towers as people with other carriers. Signals are always good downtown.

I get excellent reception almost everywhere around campus and in town, even inside of buildings. Occassionally my service will fade out for a few minutes for some reason out where I live (copperbeech). but overall i'm not having nearly the difficulty everyone else seems to be having with AT&T / Cingular around campus... afterall, PSU campus is an AT&T campus... so signal should be strong almost everywhere

Service is really good if you are near a major highway, but really sucks if you are in bumscrew nowhere, like the Central PA back roads and in the valleys. Nextel is pricey but not bad reception. I found that the walkie talkie thing was cool in the beginning, but hardly every use it now. I get good signals in inside buildings too for the most part.

Certain areas have no reception but others have excellent reception. Stupid mountains. Areas near South Hills Business School, and Lions Gate apartments on Waupelani Drive, all the way to the Giant off of Martin St. my cell phone is vertually useless, (between 0-2 bars). Other side of town, usually 5 out 5.

Reception is constantly changing. I can be talking on the phone and it's perfectly fine and the next second the call is cut off and it can take numerous tries when redialing to be connected again. Not sure if it's the phone or the service.

Verizon reception is fine (4-5 bars) along Toftrees Ave, but along Cricklewood drive, I get 2 bars at best, usually just 1. Frequent dropped calls and the phone strains for enough signal to start a new call.

AT&T / Cingular have very spotty reception in this area, and GSM is worse than the old network. I have switched to Verizon, and I hear Nextel is great here too. I would suggest you avoid AT&T / Cingular at any cost. I was frustrated constantly for a year. I love Verizon.

Had a sprint phone for two days (Complete joke!) Did a one year GSM At&t contract that sucked. It was ok in the beginning, then into it a month or so it got real bad, no reception at either house, (lived in two intown locations) then it got real good (relatively speaking) for Jan and part of Feb. Lately I had no service at all even in my sweet spots around the house. GIrlfriend has TDMA At&t here and it works pretty good. I was told the GSM was "Way better" by the salesperson. I just switched to Verizon today, and guess what? This isn't a dead spot, At&t GSM just SUCKS!
Happy for the first time in a while!!! :)
