Calls made to / from Verizon handset frequently break up, or drop completely. Signal varies between none and 1 bar, and even while stationary with 1 bar, quality is usually so bad, it's not worth trying. And when the quality is OK, the call gets dropped randomly.

Jumps between no signal and 1 bar, sometimes roaming on cingular, also with 1 bar. Calls get dropped, or have high static.

T-Mobile reception bounces between 1 bar and no signal, occasionally jumping to Cingular (also 1 bar). Suffice it to say that you have to walk around a bit, do some strategic planning, and not move around while trying to make a call, otherwise they drop. Also tried it with Nextel (2-bars, works ok, 1 in 20 gets dropped) and Verizon (1-bar, calls dropped 60-70% of the time). It looks like if you want reliable service out there, you need to find someone to sell you an AMPS handset + service. That or a sat phone...
