I travel throughout Lousiana and Mississippi quite often, and most of their towers were knocked out by the hurricane. there are a lot of areas you may have signal but no be able to use it. however, I had my company contact them and got a satellite booster in my truck which sat on the seat. it grabbed signal from a sattelite and turned my truck into a mobile cell tower. I got perfect signal everywhere after that. however, Nextel is supposed to have full coverage back up in those two stated by mid jun of '06. on another note, I have tried several other networks in those areas and the only company I got perfect reception everywhere with was cingular. they has very reasonable plans, and amazing coverage everywhere. they also have a new ptt feature.
Sprint PCS is absolutely worthless in Lakewood. I am lucky to get a single bar at my house. The phone doesn't ring, but somehow manages sometimes to announce that I have a new voice message. More often than not, if I call to retrieve my voicemail, I have to pay for analog charges because I'm "beyond my service area"! From my own house! I bought the phone at the Radio Shack half a mile away! On abrams between approximately Kenwood and Richmond, your call will be dropped, guaranteed. If you live in Lakewood, DON'T SIGN UP WITH SPRINT!
Highland Park I have witnessed always tends to have lousy cell service both for my Nokia and on my previously owned nextel, however I have people telling me they get great service so, it may just be my phone or my luck...
We great reception with T-Mobile in this area, even in the basement garage of our building. 5 bars all the time. I have found a few dead spots in other parts of town, however.
Outside I have to walk around to try to find a spot where I can get reception, and a lot of the time if I find reception in one spot, it'll go away after a few minutes. Phones rarely get reception inside or near any of the buildings. Also, a lot of the time it won't even tell me that I've missed a call and even though the person leaves a voice message, I don't receive it depending on which building I'm in on campus. Right after Cingular switched to gsm I could get reception in the middle of the desert in the middle of nowhere in the Western United States, but I can't get good reception in the middle of a major city.
