At this intersection during drive time in the evenings (5PM - 5:30PM) I frequently drop to analog channels and then on those calls frequently drop calls. Overall - Verizon in Houston is excellent!

I-45 South From Dallas To Houston / I-45 intersection, Houston, TX 77009 |
Thu Feb 02, 2006 |
dropped every single call during course of a 3-4 hour drive from Dallas to Houston along I-45. Customer service is an oxymoron (they've "dead zones" between their ears!); the only segment of Sprint / Nextel that actually works is their billing department.

Service in this area was great until a few days before hurricane Rita, when it tanked all over town. On the local news Cingular reps blamed the problems on high call volume. Afterward, service improved in many places, but not here.

San Felipe / Chimney Rock intersection, Houston, TX 77056 |

Coverage in this area is spotty at best while driving on San Felipe. Inside the building, I can hardly get any reception. The phone sometimes searches for a signal for 20-30 minutes and calls that are received are being cut off when I turn my head a little bit. T-Mobile has better coverage in this area, although it may be analog.

I've never had any dropped calls at all, and I do a good bit of travelling in the Houston area. I usually get 4 / 4 bars outdoors, and at least 2 indoors, except for that occasional dead spot. Recently, I've seen signal strength improve in some previous dead spots, so they must be making progress. Great network!

Reception sucks inside apartment. I keep missing incoming calls, and calls drop when I make calls. This has happened to all my friends / family who have used their cell phones in my apt. Looks more like the location / geometry of the apt.

One more thing, the "reception bar icon" on the phone is a joke. Personally I think it is written in the software on the phone to stay full or very high on idle - for their "more bars in more places." I guess they don't mean more reception. More like false advertising. Right now my phone is showing full reception, but as soon as I call out it will drop to 1 bar and the call will be inaudible.
