Although they work, I am often on Mexican towers as traveling Eagle Ford Shale / Galvan Ranches. The area is under serviced by all carriers. Expect less coverage to no coverage wherever you go outside of Laredo. It's so bad the government and the PUC have a subsidized satellite service that is available. If you want Data, expect Edge only outside of Laredo. Better to get a USB mini or micro to USB and go back to dialup services with unlimited calling plans, and use phone as modem to a computer, then to depend on data. Virgin Mobile / Sprint give limited coverage on roads going north other than I35, which is covered mostly. Have friends who stay true to Verizon, and boosters that get by. Most oilfield and ranchers who need coverage end up spending a wad of cash for boosters, antennas and so on to make little service work. All vendors tell you more towers, better service and so on.

We work on the railroad and seems to be the only phone that works, you look at coverage maps and you will see that most carriers claim best reception out there and it is far from it. AT&T though seems to be the preferred carrier all the other ones leave you wondering if you miss a call. Sprint is the worst of them all, followed closely by Verizon

I must say that I get great reception from AT&T here in Laredo, TX. There is just one complaint I have. They need to make another tower closer to west Laredo because the signal does drop and in rare cases you get signal from Mexican Carriers such as Movistar or Telcel. But all in all The reception in laredo from AT&T is the best

If you ever in Laredo, TX do not use a Cingular phone next to the border or at the college. The Mexican cell antennas take over the phone and if you answer a call it is an outragous amount to pay. I have Cingular and for answering a phone call I get charged $5 dollars a minute. So watch out. I am looking forward to changing with Verizon, I have heard good things about them.
