Performance and reception are both very "meh." I don't usually experience dropped calls or texts unless I'm inside a building prone to interference and attenuation (*cough* GE). Data connection is a different story. The fact that an area with a major university and billed as a top place to live doesn't have 4G is downright embarrassing. Hell we barely have 3G here most of the time with speeds well under 1Mbit. When I go jogging around the neighborhoods around 29 and 250 my streaming music will struggle and hiccup. I had better speeds on a mountain (with a 4G connection to boot). I'm sure the wildlife and vegetation appreciates being able to "rule the air".

I didn't have problems with my Verizon service in Charlottesville until 2 months ago. I can barely get a text message out let alone make a phone call that doesn't drop. I don't know what changed but I've been out of Charlottesville with this same phone in that time frame without any problems. I got better cell service with it in Belize than I do here.

Cellular reception is generally adequate, but can be spotty. Data (3G) reception is poor. It is not uncommon to have good reception in a spot for minutes at a time, and it just go away. It is not uncommon for two different phones (HTC and iPhone) on the same carrier to be side by side and one have reception and the other not.

I find it humorous that Verizon gets glowing ratings in Charlottesville. I have been with them 2 years and have frequent dropped calls. I understand the lack of coverage in the country, but not on the downtown mall or major shopping areas. My best friend has Sprint and she gets coverage on even the back roads. I give Verizon a C- rating.

I got my first Verizon phone in Alexandria and kept it when moving to Cville in 2006. At that time they did not have Verizon here but reception has been great the whole time I've had it, including nationwide. The only time I have a problem is if I am up on the mountains or in one of the "hollows" where there is no reception for anyone. I wish I could go with a cheaper prepaid pain like Virgin but the Sprint network does not work as good here according to reviews. I wholeheartedly recommend Verizon for this area and actually just about any area - they really do have the best coverage. Caveat - I do not have a smartphone - I only use it for calls and some texting but people I know with Verizon like their smartphone connection too.

Ivy Exit on I-64 / Exit 114 (I Believe) and I-64, Charlottesville, VA 22901 Mon Oct 11, 2010

I had a breakdown on county road 637. This was the Ivy exit 114 (I believe) off of I-64 West. I was using Tracfone, and it put me down (No signal). Luckily my wife uses Verizon, and if not for her Verizon Cell Phone (LG), I may still be waiting for a signal. Note: She has never been without a signal, no matter where she has traveled. Luck?? You will have to decide on that one.. I even tried recently, "Consumer Cellular" with the same results as Tracfone... NO SIGNAL... . I will be changing my service..

I came to Charlottesville in March and April 2009 to look for a house and the extended network coverage was terrible (couldn't send pictures or videos). SInce moving here in June 2009, Verizon has bought AllTel and the service seems to be improving. I can send pictures and videos from almost anywhere. Still some weak coverage in outlying areas (VA 20 between I-64 and Scottsville). The "network" is making a significant change in the area.

I do not get Verizon service features such as "Get it Now," "Mobile Web," phone software updates, and sometimes voicemail. The reason I cannot get Verizon features is because they go through AllTel and other carriers for reception. I cannot order a new Verizon phone online because when I enter my zip code it says they do not provide service.

In my apartment I have between 0-2 bars of reception, with many dropped calls and very spotty voice quality. Outside my phone seems to perform slightly better, but service highly vulnerable to peak-usage-related service disruptions, with game-day or weekend nights often resulting in almost total inability to place or receive a phone call.

My girlfriend has Verizon and it frequently kicks my T-Mobile butt. In many areas she only has 2 or 1 bar, but she can still maintain a clear call without dropage. IN the same areas I either get 3 bars with frequent drops or no bars at all. It's too bad Verizon is unavailable from a local store. Also, many of the phone's features (such as downloading ringtones) are turned off while she's in Charlottesville because it's on a extended network. But the voice quality is good!

Everywhere in and around Charlottesville, I have perfect service on the extended network. I was told that Verizon uses Alltel towers in the area, so the service with them should be great as well.

Coverage with Verizon's extended network is good in Charlottesville but spotty in the surrounding county. Coverage is still far better than with Sprint which I used to have and discontinued because its poor national and local coverage (e.g. no receptions in many large airports). Although Veriszon doesn't sell phones in Charlottesville and I had to get the phone near DC and have a 703 area code, I am much more satisfied iwth Verizon than with Sprint. Verizon has great national coverage too.
