Cingular acquired all of SunCom's VA customer base with the Cingular / AT&T merger. They claim that they are looking into improving Charlottesville coverage, but no specific promises. Coverage around Cville proper is spotty with few areas of perfect signal. In many areas, you can't get a usable signal indoors. Even in areas of apparent average signal, dropped calls are common. Rt 250 just west of the bypass (e.g. Boars Head) has very poor if any signal. Don't know about Ivy / Crozet. Rt 29 north of town is pretty reliable through the developed area, and the Hollymead / Forrest Lakes area has average signal. Rt 29 south to Lynchburg has spotty coverage.

0 to 2 bars at best, very poor coverage in area and customer service exceptionally ignorant.

The construction of the new shopping center (Target, Harris Teeter, PetsMart, and the rest), and a lightning strike to the tower have left the reception poor. You might get a good call or two, but half my calls seem to go choppy. I am getting two bars right now, so maybe my phone has stopped teasing me with three bars. Complaints to Sprint have gone unfixed. They have blaimed the phone (Samsung A660 / VI660), but refuse to let me have a promotional price on a new phone. They have told me that "I shouldn't have to call them this often", but haven't fixed the problems that lead to me having to call them 3-5 times a month. They won't let me out of my contract, so I'll have to pay them $200 to go somewhere that will provide better service... but wait, Sprint is about the only game in town, no Verizon here. Our only other choices here for CDMA providers are Alltel, Ntelos, and US Cellular.

Get good reception around most of Pantops area and downtown C'Ville but the minute you turn off 20 North, reception drops to nothing.

Good reception outside, in town. No reception in Wintergreen Resort, and parts of southern Albemarle. No reception on some sections of Rte 29 towards DC, around Madison County. Reception inside buildings is weak. I always have reception at home, but sound quality is sometimes low. I don't always get reception at my UVa office (phone switches to digital roam), and if I do get reception, call quality is far from satisfactory.

Alltel easily has the best reception in the area. I work for a contractor driving out around the counties (Albemarle, Green, Nelson, etc) and get reception in places no one else does. Also, with the "National Freedom" plan I've always had reception while traveling in major cities, small towns, several calls with vehicle trouble in highways, everywhere... The Only trouble is the lack of phone selection. The Nokia phone gets reception in places that people with Alltel that use Motorola or Kyocera phones get no reception. I've been wanting to change companies just to get a higher end model (of Nokia, of course), but no one else can match the coverage area.

Reliable coverage all over Charlottesville, Albemarle Co. and surrounding areas. Also indoor coverage(800mhz) is excellent.

Spotty at best around here. Better around other parts of town though. Call connection times are to long. Also they connect with a annoying click click sound. The same thing happens when someone attemptes to call with about 20sec of clicking then voicemail.

Suncom TDMA works well throughout the Charlottesville area. But in the county of Albemarle, there are definately weak or empty spots.

Very little reception in Charlottesville, VA. The store will tell you they have reception but they don't. It worked ok in the Washington DC area except in buildings where GSM does not seem to work. Avoid AT&T GSM until the network improves.
