Ivy Exit on I-64 / Exit 114 (I Believe) and I-64, Charlottesville, VA 22901 |
Mon Oct 11, 2010 |
I had a breakdown on county road 637. This was the Ivy exit 114 (I believe) off of I-64 West. I was using Tracfone, and it put me down (No signal). Luckily my wife uses Verizon, and if not for her Verizon Cell Phone (LG), I may still be waiting for a signal. Note: She has never been without a signal, no matter where she has traveled. Luck?? You will have to decide on that one.. I even tried recently, "Consumer Cellular" with the same results as Tracfone... NO SIGNAL... . I will be changing my service..

I reached Charlottesville, VA today on a business trip and before coming, I confirmed with the MetroPCS customer care center on whether I would have coverage in the "22901" area. His answer was in the affirmative. Alas, on reaching Charlottesville, I can only text but no incoming / outgoing calls. My problem is now that I am going to be here with no availability to make / receive calls from my mobile.

I get no reception at all in any number of locations. The folks at AT&T hav been attentive, but nothing ever gets resolved. They look at their maps and assure me I should be getting the calls I never get. They say things will improve sometime in 2009, but in the meantime I'm virtually without a cell phone.

I have drop calls almost every day and calls that do not ring in but the voice message does. I went to the Sprint store today and told the clerk about my drop calls she said it was the first time anyone every told her about drop calls! I realized after I had left the store I didn't ask her how long she had worked at the store and yes maybe today was her first day. I'm just not happy with Sprint service and if by chance this was not the clerks first day at work I'm not happy with the honesty of the employee of Sprint.

I do not get Verizon service features such as "Get it Now," "Mobile Web," phone software updates, and sometimes voicemail. The reason I cannot get Verizon features is because they go through AllTel and other carriers for reception. I cannot order a new Verizon phone online because when I enter my zip code it says they do not provide service.

I had a few problems getting reception in my apartment not far from campus with Sprint so I found this site looking for reviews. The person posting on April 23, 2006 was a huge help. I am just backing up those statements by saying Alltel really does a great job around here, much better reception than any other carrier that I know of and I have friends that use them all. I no longer have to look for a window to use my phone inside and coverage all over campus wher I spend most of my time and Charlottesville in general is great.

Pretty good reception around town and the North Grounds. A little spotty in my Barracks West apartment, but it's a basement place, and I still get reception if I'm 6 feet or so from one of the windows.

Live in Barracks West, just past Georgetown off Barracks Rd and getting a usable signal in my apartment is virtually impossible--I can't get reception downstairs at all and am typically on one bar (or less) upstairs. In general, I've found Cingular's coverage in Charlottesville to be spotty at best. Reception on major thoroughfares is decent for the most part, but once you leave them cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I live in Four Seasons off of Hydraulic Rd. and I can't even drive to my house from any directions without dropping a call. I only have one to two bars at my house and then only when I'm upstairs. I drop calls ALL THE TIME! I live in town so there should be good service but T-Mobile has failed me in all respects. The only place my phone works is right on 29 in town, at the mall, and downtown. But let me tell you it's not the phone you'd want to have if you suddenly got stuck on the side of the road because chances are you'd never be able to get it to work when you needed it...

I work for OneStop Cellular in Fashion Square Mall. I sell 4 carriers, Alltel, Cingular, Nextel, NTelos (and until recently T-Mobile). Out of all my carriers Alltel has by far the best signal. I have a digital only phone, meaning it won't pick up on old analog signals in rural areas, and I have only lost my signal once, not only traveling through out the entire state of VA but the entire east coast (and I travel every week). I only lost signal for 3 minutes in Gordonsville, due to no towers in that area due to restrictions on building cell towers. My phone even gets a digital signal in Nelson County, way, way off the road at my mother's cabin. The Alltel network INCLUDES the Verizon and Sprint networks, meaning you can use any of thoe towers for FREE. Plus, there's no roaming on your home sate's towers, no matter the carrier! All my Alltel customers come back happy and out of all carriers I love this one the most. If you ever are interested in any service, come to a store like ours and let us show you the coverage maps side by side!

Everywhere in and around Charlottesville, I have perfect service on the extended network. I was told that Verizon uses Alltel towers in the area, so the service with them should be great as well.

With all the negative reviews here, and glowing Alltel, I think I needed to add a non-shill opinion. When I canceled my 2-year contract with Alltel after over 2 years, they tried to bill me over $200 of invented termination charges. Wireless coverage was good, true, but many calls dropped, clicky sounds and difficult connections were the norm. And mostly, Alltel customer service was abysmal. T-mobile in Charlottesville has *very slightly* less coverage, but connections are quicker and especially, customer service has been very good. All in all, T-Mobile is much better.
