I've had Sprint service in South Hill for nearly 10 years and don't have near the problems that other people have with other carriers. I wish we would get another tower to boost my kids signals inside our house. I get much better reception in rural areas than most as well. Don't forget: phone models are the culprit of bad reception... my phone is 3 years old and I get better reception in the house than my kids with their 6 month old phones!
Alltel is really the only cell service I've found that will work throughout South Hill from the other providers I've tried and what my friends with other providers tell me. Look at the tower lookup on this site. Alltel is the only carrier that has a tower down in South Hill and it looks like everybody else focuses on the interstate and assumes the signal covers us. As you get away from the interstate, I still have a good signal on the highways. No problems either at the elementary school or shopping at Wal-Mart. I'm pleased with how Alltel covers this area and would recommend them to others. Overall, it seems to be a good value compared to others especially with the My Circle feature and now that family choice plan with free texting I see the commercials for. But most importantly, great coverage here.
This road is just above dead. May be one good spot. Phones do not work inside houses and spotty when outside. Years ago when we first signed up with Verizon everything was great. Now with newer phones (V325, Motorola 815, Nokia 6315i) nothing works. Maybe switching to Alltel or tmobile.
I get no signal on my Cingular Razor V3 leaving South Hill VA east to Emporia VA. Zero It's 40 mils distance without a signal Bar. Cingular promises full bars, but not bwt South Hill and Emporia VA. I would hate to get a blow out or need car assistance. Please get some towers out there. I travel that Hwy. every week. tks
I get decent quality while I'm driving on the town roads, but as soon as I get out of town or go into my apt reception drops drastically. Many times the call is just dropped. Its so bad that when I get home I just tell the person to call me back on my home phone so I don't get charged long distance (I'm single and just moved by myself) fees. My dad has Sprint and uses it with no issues inside my aparentment. My girlfriend has Verizon and had no issues as well, so there is some issue with Cingular customers down here. I'm aware that S. Va doesn't have many decent towers, but this is ridiculous. Maybe I can get out of my contract since I moved and am no longer in my calling area. (I'm on their nation wide network that doesn't really work) My advice is to stay away from Cingular unless you live in a very highly populated city (Richmond, VA being the exception). I've traveled to Richmond and the recption is even worse than where I live. I'm not even able to make calls half the time. That is just absurd, especially while in a large city. Cingular needs to get their act together, but I doubt they will as long as people continue to feed them, myself included :(
