As of 8 / 28 / 07 the new VZW "Chapel Acres" cell site is officially up and running. Saw the VZW "test men" in their "porcupine-mobiles" laden with antennae, riding up and down the streets testing the reliability of the new signal. Since this is a new cell site to fill in a long unserved area, it is ALL-DIGITAL (CDMA only, no analog AMPS) and will also fill a gaping hole in their Broadband Access, EV-DO, Rev. A, and 1XRTT coverage maps. Such a pleasure to have clear, strong reception in this former "death valley" for cell phones. Coverage reaches approx from Waterline Dr.(on the FC Pkway) to Sydenstricker overpass to Rolling Rd overpass. Also fills in all those dead areas along Hooes Rd south of the Pkway to Silverbrook, and Pohick Rd past Newington Forest almost to Alban Rd (near the covered-bridge townhouses!)

as of 8 / 27 / 07 now getting intermittent 4 - 5 bars Digital (test) signals from new Pohick road tower down the street, but can't make / receive calls yet. apparently they are testing the gear at the transmitter site before fully launching service. last heard that service will be up and running between Labor Day and end of September. new tower can be viewed from the Sydenstricker Park and Ride Lot looking towards Pohick and Hooes about 1 mile away; as well as from Gambrill Rd near Middle Valley Stream parkland. All you can see is the top of the tower above treeline -- period. Can see the tower base and cabinets at the Korean Church site on Pohick. Can't wait to get working service from this new site.

that info must be right! i've seen a bobcat front-end loader on the church property next to a pile of new gravel. looks like they are starting to clear trees for a small driveway to the left of the church buildings. is this for the access road to the new cell site that Verizon is putting up there? I dunno, maybe? hope so! this is the small korean church wooded lot in the 8600 block of pohick, made up of a small brick church and lots of temporary trailer classrooms.

Good News Update, Late May 2007: Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus! The Fairfax County DPWES staff has *finally* approved almost ALL required permits for the NEW Verizon Wireless-named "CHAPEL ACRES" cell site. Construction is expected to begin soon, per the Miss Utility Of Virginia web site ticket listings. Locals should start seeing actual construction equipment on the Calvary KBC property soon, to make way for the camo "tree pole" (120'), base station hut, and service road. If all goes as planned, this long-overdue cell site may be in service and on-the-air by the early Autumn months(??) So, if you see a freakishly-tall fake tree rising above the treeline behind the new St. Raymond of Penafort RC Church, you'll know that a good signal is not far behind. To all of those far-too-patient-than-I-am folks in Newington Forest, Creekside, Lakes Mercer and Huntsman, Middle Creek, Glenwood Manor, Lakewood Hills, etc., your wait is almost over. We have many friends who live in this large Middle Valley dead spot and our phones never work when we visit them. Some of these people have waiting almost 2 decades to get Verizon Wireless to place a tower here. Lots of letters written to politicians, HOA's, regulators, utility company execs, etc. Hope you long-suffering Springfield residents can finally get a signal down that way. Good luck! Guess if you lived in Great Falls, you would have had micro-cells placed in 1996. LOL!

VzW's proposed CHAPEL ACRES cell site at rr8616 Pohick Rd (Calvary Korean Baptist Church) is still being held-up by Fairfax County DPWES officials, with latest bond payments made 1 / 24 / 07 per county's LDSnet web tool. The site is now supposed to be fully in-service by the first half of 2007, assuming the County staff doesn't stall it any longer. Until that time, there is very little usable signal for VzW users, especially those living near the low-lying streambeds and lake districts nearby. Closest legacy VzW sites are over 3-5 miles away near Newington, Lorton, Butts Corner, Five Points-Burke VFD, West Springfield, etc., none being close enough to provide adequate signal strength for more than a few seconds -- hardly enough to place / receive calls.

According to Fairfax County Govt website (posted public info), Verizon Wireless applied for NEW cell site several years ago at 8616 POHICK RD (aka: Calvary Korean Baptist Church property) for a new 120' stealth tree-pole for their proposed "Chapel Acres" cell site. Unfortunately, application has been tied up by county staffers, DPWES, etc. Letters have been written to County Board supervisors, etc., to no avail. County wants proffers (freebies like street lights, shrubs, paved trails, etc.) before it will let them put up the site. Some county staffers estimate approval may occur soon. Site *may* be in-service by late 2006. But, we've heard that before! This area has been a dead spot for almost 2 decades. What gives??!

Located in Daventry Community Association. On Hunter Village. Between Old Keene Mill and Rolling Road. Near the Fairfax County Parkway. In Fairfax County. Consistent 1 bar of coverage, fluctuates between 0 and 2 bars. Somebody please get the Board of Directors to act on this! We need cell phone coverage!

I have tried Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, Tmobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Currently have Verizon. In Daventry, phone shows 0 to 2 bars. All calls made within Daventry result in dropped calls. Daventry Board had an opportunity for one large carrier to install a disguised cell tower, and the carrier would have paid rent to Daventry, resulting in lower HOA dues! But, the Daventry Board unilaterally chose to NOT pursue this in secret, and did not inform the homeowners. This needs to change -- Daventry needs cell reception.

I have tried both Verizon and Cingular in this area with little to no use. I get very little reception, especially at my house, and have to really hold still to make a call. The only way to make a clear call is to buy an external antenna for the phone, kind of seems silly to have a wire on a "wireless" phone.

I live right off of Rolling and the Fairfax County Pkwy. and I have no service inside my house. Outside, I can occassionally get enough service for the phone to ring, but not enough to answer. In such a heavily populated area, I would expect better service and for a company to do something about this.

OK outdoors in the winter when the foilage is gone. Standing in the doorway of the townhome - maybe one bar. Spring Summer the reception marginally better. I rried T-Mobile, Cingular, AT&T and Verizon had the best reception, such as it is. Wireless is West Springfield is just plain awful.
