Chittenden and North Chittenden suffer from poor coverage. I use Sprint and the service is between 0 and 2 bars through out the area. Verizon is no better and I have tested this by setting my phone to roaming only. When you get into Pittsford the coverage improves because Route 7 is pretty well covered by Verizon and Sprint. I think US Cellular also has towers in Rutland and along Route 7. Virgin Mobile service should be good in Rutland and on most of Route 7. They use the Sprint network so if Sprint has service Virgin Mobile will work. Overall coverage in Vermont is not very good. The best coverage is in cities and on major roads just like everywhere else but the problem is Vermont doesn't have many cities and major roads so a lot of the time your phone won't work. Unicel is trying to expand coverage in Vermont and they have better coverage than anyone else according to people I have talked with. That is good news for Cingular customers because even though Cingular doesn't have any towers in the state you guys can roam off Unicel which has pretty good coverage.
I drive to New Hampshire a few times a month and there is a long section of Route 4 between Killington and Woodstock which has no service except for a mile or so. After Woodstock the service fades to one or no bars until a couple miles outside White River Jct. My friend with Cingular was able to roam off what I assume would be Unicel. If you are looking for a company with good service in Vermont you won't find one. Unicel is probably a good choice. I chose Sprint because they are nationwide and the roam off Verizon so you have all the Verizon towers and all the Sprint towers. Write to your provider and ask them to increase coverage. It would help the people that live in Vermont and the people that travel through.
