We live next to Lake Winnebago by Menominee Park and cannot use our phones in the house. Other than that they work pretty well. Lots of dropped calls on 45 to Fond du lac.

I talked to a lot of people before deciding on a carrier and about the different trouble areas. I ended up going with Alltel because I didn't hear a single bad thing about them and it was a great decision. To me, there are 2 factors to consider in picking a cell carrier, the first is coverage. Alltel's coverage is great around here. I'm on full signal all over Oshkosh. I get 5 bars on campus at UWO and at apartment. Out shopping and everywhere around the area the signal is good. Most carriers do good in the city but Alltel seems to be good all over this part of the state and the National map looked great. Even out on the road and in rural places where not many people live Alltel has been fine. The second factor is cost. I compared plans and Alltel seemed to give more minutes for the price on every plan than anybody else. I'm on a family plan and My Circle, which was unlimited calling to any 10 numbers was a big factor because I didn't need as many anytime minutes as I would have with somebody like Verizon. Overall, Alltel just seemed like a good deal compared to others and they are really good in this area for being able to make a call anywhere.

I'm not very happy with Verizon's service in Oshkosh. I live on the north side of town, near the County Park. I have 1-2 bars of signal there. Often I cannot even check my voicemail. Other people can use their phones in my house, but I cannot. Like other previous reviews here, I routinely get voice mail messages without my phone ringing. That seems to happen in many locations - even places I have 4 bars of signal. A technician at Verizon told me that my problem was with my phone. Well, I've had 4 phones (2 LG phones, and 2 Motorola V276) and I have had poor signal problems with all. The technician said there were two towers within a mile of my house and that I absolutely should have been getting a clear signal. Well, I rarely do. Coverage around the UWO campus is terrible. If I'm outside, I can usually hear most of my phone call, and I can sometimes dial out. But if I'm indoors - forget it, even if I'm on the second floor of a building. Again, other people seem to be able to use their phones here, but I cannot. Coverage in the Appleton area seems good - Airport, Mall, downtown are all strong. When I travel to other cities, I have usually had good coverage (Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Philadelphia). Another downside is there is no Verizon store in Oshkosh, so I must travel up to Appleton if I need help. If you're late paying your bill, expect a hefty penalty fee -- $5.00. Ouch. That is a full 11% of my bill -- or the equivalent of 134% APR. Hwy. robbery - and it should be illegal. I'm switching carriers as soon as my contract runs out. I'll probably go with Sprint / Nextel.

I get very limited reception in this area and absolutely No reception in the area between Cty Rd FF / 91, also along Hwy. 45 between Oshkosh and Fond du Lac at certain times of the year (esp. late winter and early spring) it seems to be weather / atmosphere related.

Out of the four cellular carriers that I have owned (Cellular-One, AT&T, Alltell, and Nextel), I have been the happiest with Nextel. It was nice when I bought my phone (in June of 2004) that they showed me an actual coverage map where I would have reception. They also seem dedicated to expanding and improving their network. The phone has worked flawless for me and the people I talk to tell me that they cannot even tell that I am on a cell phone. I have also been extremely impressed with their customer service and cannot say enough good things about Gregory, one of Nextel's engineers from Green Bay. While using my phone, I found a dead spot along the North side of Stevens Point on I-39 that probably shouldn't be there. I submitted a complaint via Nextel's website, and within three days, Gregory called me up and asked me a lot of questions regarding the dead spot. He told me that he was looking into exactly why the dead spot exists and said that they would make every reasonable attempt to fix the problem. He even gave me he number and told me to call him if I continue to have the problem or have any other questions. I would like to know how many carriers would go to this extent to listen to their customers. My guess is not too many. As long as they keep up the great work, I will remain a Nextel customer for life.
