DO NOT TRUST SPRINT COVERAGE MAP (for Skagway at least). There is no where in town in which I was able to pick up service. Didn't get reception in Haines either. Called Sprint about it and they said they have no service there. They still haven't updated the coverage map to show that. Do not trust them. Sprint's customer service is very, very bad.
I recently took a month long trip through Alaska. The only location I received coverage was in Anchorage / Palmer. Fairbanks, Tok, Homer, Soldotna, and all places in between were dead. Not what I expected from a nationwide provider of this size.

My AT&T worked perfectly in Homer in 2006. When I arrived at the airport in Anchorage in 2007 it didn't work at all. I don't sign contracts with cell phone companies. The phone was a pay as you go. Solution: I bought a pay as you go ACS phone to use only in Alaska and the AT&T to use everywhere else.
I am just anxiously waiting for my contract to end. I was told they were getting new cell towers aroung the mat su area. I went from 0 to off and on in different areas of my home, but to me thats still a 0. Many dead spots. Very very poor reception. I'm going with a different carrier as soon as I can

Below average reception outdoors; no reception inside the (log) house. We're near the top of an east-facing hill. Our current cell phones won't take an antenna, so we plan to switch to another phone style and use an antenna indoors. Any carriers interested in putting a cell tower on my property?!
I bought a Go Phone for travel. I travel to Alaska frequently and was supprised to find no service in Alaska as the coverage map showed coverage in the highway areas. I hope this service is returned as I would rather not change service.

Had great reception the first month. Then, NOTHING in the area. Do these co.s rent tower space at different strengths ? After 30 day lemon law, bump you down to lower transmission ? I would imagine that their profit margin would go up. I am NOT happy at all with cell one.

No reception at all. I have to go to the top of Moose Creek hill on the Palmer side to get service. A real pain in the you know what.

In the summer of 2006 my AT&T pay as you go phone worked perfectly in Alaska. When AT&T switched to Cingular, my remaining minutes were transferred to a new phone. In January, 2007 when I returned to Alaska the new phone didn't work at all. When I called Cingular they said they did not cover Alaska.
I have lived and traveled around Alaska since May 2006. My Cingular service worked great until 12 / 28 / 06. Cingular did inform me that this would happen and offered me to back out of my contract because of it. They explained that they will no longer pay to use other carriers towers. My phone is completely dead in Homer and I assume all over AK as they said it would be. However, I have not been outside of Homer since my service went dead.
