Historically no reception in harbor area. Reception beyond 4 miles north of Klawock toward Thorne Bay is poor to none. As of 12 / 20 / 06 there has been no reception in Klawock for 4 days straight. The other local cell phone company is working. The only thing going for Cellular is you can get reception in the outside waters at times.
Virgin Mobile told me they were on the Sprint network and showed me a map that showed coverage of Juneau. They told me they should work in Juneau. Virgin Mobile does not work anywhere in South East Alaska. I've tried from Skagway to further south than Ketchikan. They never claimed Alaska was their thing, but they did say Juneau.
I travel a lot when I am out of Bethel, and was looking for a cheap way to communicate with family. Virgin Mobile said they had coverage in Anchorage, and other larger towns in Alaska. Lie. No signal at the airport, or at the Tudor-Muldoon curve (or anywhere in between), or on the way to the city of Kenai. Even though it is cheap, it is not worth it if you are not in the lower 48. I went with ACS, and am much happier.
Cingular reception was virtually perfect for the first month I lived here and then one night service cut off permanently. It was as if someone at Cingular hit a switch. I've heard that Cingular is attempting to weed out alaskan residents so Im a bit suspicious but the bottom line is that i'm stuck with o service and cut off from the states. What's worse, I spent 2hrs a day on the phone with customer service getting bounced all around. Ultimately, they suggested I drive on the parks and waive the phone around. when that failed, they tried to hold me to my contract. Bottom line: unpredictable and I think that they shut you off once they realize you're in alaska for more than a vacation.
I'm disappointed that there is No Service here. My phone had great reception just about my entire trip across the country (I relocated to Kodiak AK from Eastport ME). Even the first half hour on the ferry from Homer AK to Kodiak I had service - (bouncing off of Cellular One towers). I have No Service here in Kodiak, although other people with cell phones do have service - but they have Sprint / Nextel as their carrier. I really did not want to switch carriers, but it looks like I am not going to have any other choice but to switch.... unless Cingular hears my pleas and decides to build a tower here on the island!
Every time I cross Tudor / Lake Otis, no matter what direction, my calls are dropped. Also, if you go under the Tudor overpass on the New Seward, reception is so poor that it sounds like the person is underwater. But, I have a great plan with Cellular One, so I'm hesitant to switch.

From W. Susitna Pkwy. until reaching Ayrshire Rd. 8 miles south no GSM coverage on Burma Rd.unless an external antenna is used. CDMA / Analog coverage from ACS or MTA is available intermittantly along the entire route. Great coverage as soon as you can see Big Lake. Great coverage on Pt. Mackenzie Rd.
Zero T-Mobile coverage in all of the Juneau / Douglas and its surrounding areas.

I really wish that Cellular One would extend the range of their TDMA service out to where I live. I mean gosh ACS setup a CDMA tower not even a mile away from where I live. I talked with a CellOne rep and he said that they were going to expand their GSM service area for Seward but he also said that they were going to leave TDMA service the way that it currently is and I don't want to switch GSM yet. But my overall service has been fine I've only had 1 or 2 droped calls. So other than the fact that I can't make call using my cell phone at my house I think Cellular One is doing an okay job.
