If I hold the phone at a certain angle I may get 1 bar. Otherwise, I get zero reception. I eould like to disconnect my home phone and use my cell only but that is impossible.

Every year we stay at the Inn at McCormicks Creek State Park, in the fall. We we keep thinking Verizon will do something to provide cell phone coverage at the park. No such luck. Even on the third floor of the Inn, next to the window, there is no coverage. My personal viewpoint: Competition only exists, in the cell phone business, in urban areas (they all "cherry pick"). The result is duplication of efforts / money (coverage) in urban areas, and no coverage in rural areas. This is an industry that should be closely regulated by the government, to avoid duplication (and cell towers everywhere) and mandated that rural areas be covered too.
I just purchased this new Sprint phone and I don't get any reception in Granger / Knollwood West or surrounding areas. I did not have any bars until I got closer to the mall. At the mall I had 4 bars and then it showed 0 bars again. Sprint's reception is terrible and I am returning the phone and canceling the contract. We also have a Verizon account which I may go back to or try Nextel. For emergency purposes Granger residents need to have a cell tower and have cell phone that work!

I have phone set to NOT roam. It's barely pulling a signal from the Central time zone (I can tell because it's Chicago time, the line for which is across lake at least 5-6 miles away.
I can't make calls to any person or voicemail. I cannot receive calls, either. If I do, by chance, initiate a call, it is dropped. I am very rarely even notified of voicemail messages.

With my old (very old) phone I had reception by my garden, but nowhere else. With this phone I have no reception, and neither does anyone else when around here. This is a simple 1 1 / 2 story wood frame house.
