Towers are built and improvements are constantly made, so the most recent comments are most reliable. But when determining which provider to go with, get a general feel rather than focusing on individual comments.

Eventually, as you read through the comments, you can see a general trend as to which service provider is superior in the area. Hopefully this will give you more of an idea rather than walking into a service plan blind. Sort by Carrier, City, Zip Code, Reception Rating, or Date by clicking on the header.

Alltel has the absolute best reception of any cell phone provider in the area. Verizon recently bought Alltel, but were not allowed to have the Dothan market which will eventually leave all Alltel customers hanging. So I thought I'd get a phone with Verizon and try it out. I bought the Samsung Omnia which is an amazing phone, much better than the Blackberry Storm. However, Verizons coverage is HORRIBLE. I travel around the area a lot, I'm on the road all day in the tri-state area. And Verizon just can't compare to Alltel.

AT&T ended my contract because I was using to much data and was roaming. Verizon is amazing. I get much better service and 3G. I have some family who are about to switch from their iPhones, too. I love my Droid phone (Ally). Shove it where the sun don't shine, AT&T. I'm also happy I got off before these new data plans come in effect. 25.00 for 2GB?! That is CRAP. I use 4GB a month, that is 45.00 with AT&T. 30.00 with Verizon. :)

I just switched my 3 lines from AT&T, and my husband switched his Alltel lines to Verizon (Verizon didn't get the Alltel market here), and the service is great! The 3G is fast, and I have not had a dropped call yet. We are very happy with Verizon Wireless!

I travel to Tallahassee from Marianna everyday. The only place I have a problem is between the weigh station and the Apalachicola river on Interstate 10. Reception in Marianna is excellent. I am extremely pleased with the coverage of Alltel. My company phone is Verizon which is very sporadic in Marianna, but otherwise very good on Interstate 10. However, I do suffer the same coverage outage previously mentioned with Alltel.

AT&T is adding 3G coverage in Jackson County. It's now available in Cottondale and Alford. Still not in Marianna, though, which is strange. Word is it's supposed to be available in Marianna later this year.

Have had very little loss of reception in this area. For such a rural area, Nextel provides the best coverage here.

Slocomb / Dothan / Abbeville, Dothan, AL 36301 Mon May 31, 2010

Service is Slocomb / Abbeville is all partner coverage. Abbeville is getting towers either this month or next and all along 431 toward Columbus to improve cell quality. Those towers will be 3G in September. Dothan will be all 3G no later than June 30th. As far as Slocomb goes, it'll continue to be partner coverage for now, with good reception - just don't use any data!

A generous Average rating. Like most of the area, the coverage gets worse the further you head away from Fort Rucker.

I live 1.75 miles from a tower and the signal will vary from 4bars down to 1 or none. Signal is not very stable when I can connect.Dropped calls are the norm. The service / signal is no better than what Alltel had provided, and it will be 2020 before Verizon will do any facil-Upgrades to tower on SR2 and US 231,Jackson Cty,Fla.
