Eventually, as you read through the comments, you can see a general trend as to which service provider is superior in the area. Hopefully this will give you more of an idea rather than walking into a service plan blind. Sort by Carrier, City, Zip Code, Reception Rating, or Date by clicking on the header.

Like all the carriers West Kentucky needs several new coverage towers. I have had all the carriers but Verizon has best and most complete coverage in KY, TN, MO, IL, and AL.

Verizon Wireless is hands down, the best choice for everyone in this area. The St. Louis region is absolutely fabulous to work with. They have repeatedly gone out of their way to help me with any problem, any time I have an issue. Also, I never have to wait on roll-over, save last New Years Day. I waited about three minutes. You just cant beat this St. Louis Region of VZW. They actually care! I've had technicians call me back the next day to find out if my problem had been resolved. I'm astonished with this level of service they provide.

I really loved AT&T service... .but now they are switching to Alltel. Not sure if I will like them. They have some very ugly phones. Anyways, reception is great for me with AT&T.

Your frustration is warranted, considering that AT&T is so far behind Verizon when it comes to the 3G network upgrade process. That is largely in part due to recent lack of spectrum because of the Cingular divestiture to AllTel. They've had to in essence rebuild in the network. Had the network already been stout enough, 3G would have already been here. But this area was unlucky in that regard. Anyway, once 3G is established, many folks will be much happier with their data service. When AT&T 3G works right, it's darn fast. Having said that, Verizon's 3G has been here since Fall 2007. And when go into rural areas outside of Paducah, you can still get 3G with Verizon. That will likely not be the case with AT&T, as they, so far, tend to have their network upgrades confined to populated and heavily traveled areas first. It may be forever before, say, parts of Livingston, or Crittenden county get AT&T 3G. But you can with Verizon (for the most part). Hang in there.

We have several phones for our workers that travel throughout Western Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The reception is bad most of the time and alot of the time we get busy circuit messages. Calls cannot be heard when calling from land line to cell phone on several occasions. Cingular certainly needs more towers.

I have a friend who uses Verizon and he can use his phone in many areas where my AT&T phone doesn't have a signal - including inside a metal building. AT&T either needs to upgrade their GSM equipment or switch to CDMA.

I get pretty good reception with T - Mobile around town but traveling around the Heath community there is little to no reception - also no reception going HWY 45 to Mayfield after you pass the area known as "the bottoms" until you get to Mayfield. I tried a Sprint phone for a one week trial (they let you do this) to see how service is - seems to be a lot better than Cingular or TMobile in the Heath ? Paducah area - not sure about HWY 45 area. I took this phone all over KY and TN adn the reception was excellent - I am definanatly switching to Sprint! PLUS to all you parents out there - Sprint has a new phone with Parental Controls - check it out for your teen!! Sanyo SCP-2400 - looks good - not like the Firefly by Cingular!

Just got the new phone with the GSM technology. The reception on my previous phone was really good--the reception now is really bad. I think its the tower problems rather than the phone. Know lots of people on Cingular and many are very unhappy with the reception right now.

I have noticed when I am in the casino parking lot I get little to no service, untill I drive down 5th street by the laundry mat and sometimes I have trouble past McDonalds on the way out of town. However, I can sit at McDonalds and where I was getting no reception to one bar I get five bars all of a sudden as if someone threw a switch to tun a tower on. Only when it is raining do I not have any trouble from the route I spoke of. It will cut out going over the bridge to Paducah Ky. not only that but it will cut out once more just before you get to exit 4 on I-24. I must say that I like Cingular service however they need to get the Metropolis and Paducah area figured out. I work in Metropolis Il. and it does the exact same thing everyday. It does get annoying.

What was I thinking? I switched from Verizon to ATT to get rollover minutes and free mobile to mobile with my friends, most of whom are on ATT. I've had ATT service for over a year now and it has gotten inreasingly worse. From the very beginning I was getting only 1-2 bars, frequently down to zero at home and frequently dropped calls. I took the phone back to the store because they said maybe I had a defective phone. Well, 3 phones later and I am getting dropped calls EVERY DAY, failed calls EVERY DAY and my phone only rings about 50% of the time when someone calls me. I"ve spent approximately 5 hours on the phone with ATT tech support in the past week alone. Nothing is any better. The map shows I am in a reception of not best, but good quality reception, but that is FAR from the truth. Today they had the gall to tell me I shoudn't expect reception in my house, that cell phones can only be expected to get good reception outdoors. Over the past year I have probably spoken with about 25 tech support employees, including supervisors with NO RESULTS. I can't wait for this contract to be up so I can go back to Verizon. I"m paying $120 per month for CRAP service when I paid the same at Verizon for excellent reception AND customer service. ATT is nothing but a boatload of CRAP excuses.
