AT&T
As of late, AT&T cell coverage has become terrible. E.g. long delays in transmitting text messages, dropped calls, loss of service. I'm curious if this is a homeland security issue in Manhattan affecting all carriers or if AT&T is just farming out its duties to subcontractors.

the only place I've lost cell reception is on the NE corner of 40th St.and 5th Ave. (across from the NY Public Library). Step off the curb, and the reception is fine again.

No problems, works beautifully unless deep inside a building.

Sheeps Meadow in Central Park seems to be a big dead zone for AT&T. My friend and I were trying with a blackberry 8300 and an iphone 3g. Can't get any calls through. Takes forever to get blackberry messenger or texts through. Forget about webpages.

I was there on a Beautiful Saturday, April 18th around 450 PM and I was trying to call my best friend..the bars were there for 3G..but nothing when I was dialing..after 5 tries..i manually switched to the older Edge network..and after 6 more tries..on the sixth try..the reception had a lot of static and was garbled..i thought it wa sthe park..but the funny thing..when got to the middle of Sheep Meadow..i got a signal!..but by that time..an hour later it was too late..as the party already left the park

It may not be the fanciest handset anymore but not a single dropped call on my Verizon Razr in about 2 years at this location!

My phone rarely works properly. It will ring, but I often cannot hear the other person at all. I had to start using Skype in my apartment.

I go to NY often and stay in the Sheraton Hotel on 7th Ave and 52nd Street. I prefer the lower floors (afraid of heights). I am now in the 7th Ave. side and have terrible phone and data service. I called customer service and they tell me I am 100ft away from a cell tower, so what is up with that? I cant believe AT&T is still on the cellular business.. Verizon is way much better countrywide.

I live on the ground floor and my building effectively blocks reception inside my apartment (even though service outside on 9th Ave is perfect and the AT&T cell tower is nearby on 811 10th Ave). I have become aware of the concerns and limitations regarding home installed cell repeaters and the expense of large industrial repeaters (and the requirement for carrier approval). Especially in Manhattan, it is not easy for the consumer to take measures to improve cellular reception. At the Web 2.0 Conference in November 2008, Ralph de la Vega CEO of AT&T Mobility, indicated that AT&T will initiate market testing of Femtocell technology in 2009. He also indicated plans to use an enhanced 850 MHz spectrum to improve signal in densely populated areas. These are both important enhancements. In the meantime, I really enjoy my iPhone but the reception is unreliable and I really want to use the iPhone. Verizon is much more immune to signal deterioration in the city.

Even though our building is 3 blocks from Columbus Circle, I get terrible reception on my iPhone, to the point where I need to stand by the window in our apt to take calls. Overall, I have had a pretty dismal experience, anywhere in NYC, with the AT&T service required of all iPhones. I love the iPhone as a device, but really miss my Verizon service. Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too...
