I never see my phone say that I am in the Verizon Network, and I can't send picture messages or receive them. I have to drive to Morehead City to do that. For the price of Verizon, their service really sucks. But at least I don't live on base anymore and don't have to worry about driving around base or off base just to use my phone like I used to.

You will get brief spouts of Service but none hardly in Pamlico, Sampson, Beaufort or Craven Counties. I travel Between Fayetteville, Pamlico and Beaufort Counties and I hardly get any service with SunCom, Cingular, AT&T GSM. I have tried cheap and expensive phones with no luck. Alltel Seems to be the only phone service that seems to have it's stuff together. I even tried a prepaid phone from Virgin with no luck.

Reception is spotty depending on what side of the building you are on and whether or not you are indoors or outdoors. If you are on the front side of the building facing the parking lot and live on the 2nd or 3rd floors, you can get pretty decent reception inside as long as you are near a window. On the backside you have to be either near a window or outside to get any signal at all. Reception on the base as a whole is junky. For whatever reason, when you come onto base the signal strength drops. The farther away from Hwy. 70 you get the less signal you have until it finally disappears altogether in the back areas around officer country and the boat docks.

Hwy. 58 to New Bern. Usually 3 out of 5 bars. Fades a bit headed North on 58 into Maysville, Pollacksville. Much better in New Bern along US 70 headed to Raleigh. Hwy. 24 East to Morehead. Usually 3 out of 5 bars. Pretty good coverage at 24 / 70 merge. Fades a bit farther east to Beaufort, NC. Hwy. 24 West to Jacksonville to Raleigh. Good 2 or 3 bars through J'ville. Starts to fade some about Richlands to Beulaville. Much better, 3 to 4 bars, along I-40. Perfect in Raleigh. Hwy. 17 South from Jacksonville, NC to Wilmington, NC. Good in J'ville, about 2 or 3 bars. Fades in and out (mostly roaming) until Wilmington. Very good if you stay along I-40.

Thought that when Nextel hooked up with Sprint and now Embarq, things would get better. Nextel is very poor downeast from Beaufort. Not bad on the water, but on land is useless. Either no bars or dropped calls.
