In my townhouse, I do get reception but it depends where I am in the house. It's much better than my wife's Sprint phone which gets a 0.5 rating... 'cos the phone only rings! At&T Reception seems to be better now that Cingular is involved. Caution: Roaming fees are VERY HIGH, up to $1 per minute + tax and all the other "fees"! I was charged 89c per minute and was told "that's cheap cos it's usually 99c per minute". LOL... General Houston reception is average quality, but I expect more in today's world. Too much interference and some dropped calls.

T-Mobile

4 Out of 5 (4 stars) | Bellaire | West Loop South, Bellaire, TX 77401 |

I chose this location for my office because I can get 4-5 bars on my phone; internal offices (no view) get less bars, and many offices go down to 0-1 bars depending on which direction you are facing. I travel all over the country - GSM is still very patchy in the US, and I don't get the sense that TMobile are doing much to make this any better. I'm going to "test" Cingular for a month (I'll only lose about $35 doing so) to see how the reception compares in Bellaire, Houston, and the US. Why test Cingular? TMobile is pretty good, but I have to use their WIFI dervice for a reasonable speeed data plan. Cingular, Sprint and Verizon all have faster data plans, and Cingular supports GSM, which is my preference for a number of reasons.

I have had mobile phones for approximately 18 years. Never has reception been so poor so consistently. In certain spots, at certain times of the day, I will get 3 bars; however, this is the exception rather than the rule.

I'm a med student living / studying in the med center. My phone is always at max or near-max signal strength in the buildings here. I get great reception all around town. I think it's phone-dependent. I had a samsung phone 2 years ago, and I got very low signal strength in the same areas.

Verizon

4 Out of 5 (4 stars) | 59 South | Wilcrest, Houston, TX 77031 |

I had Sprint 3 years ago and got dropped all the time. I then went with T-Mobile and got decent, but occasionally scratchy reception. I never got reception in my house, tho. I have been on Verizon for a year and have never had a problem with reception anywhere in Houston, excepting when I am very deep in the bowels of a metal building. Verizon has a tendency to make "mistakes" in their favor, on their bills, and God help you if you go over your minutes! They also won't tell you that, if you don't want to pay for text messaging, that people can still text-message you, at your cost, unless you also turn that feature off. One learns as on goes... Basically, Verizon is the best reception in Houston. They are also, by far and away, the most expensive. Their "nites and weekends" are also the shortest and tricky. Hint: If you check your messages from a land line, you don't use up your minutes, like you do when you check from your cell phone.

Reception can be a little hard to find in some areas, but only on rare occasions. Otherwise it's great. Anywhere in the city has good reception.

I just switched from T-Mobile to Cingular and now get reception inside my house and outside. In fact the areas where T-Mobile reception was spotty and poor is now perfect with Cingular. I get reception in my parking garage and the building elevator, just excellent reception overall. Very pleased.

T-Mobile

5 Out of 5 (5 stars) | Heights Blvd. | 20th St., Houston, TX 77008 |

Switched to T-Mobile a few years ago since Sprint seems to lose the signal in my house. My friends who currently have sprint have also switched to T-Mobile because of reception problems in the Heights area.

1 Out of 5 (1 star) | Eldridge Pkwy. | Briar Forest, Houston, TX 77077 |

AT&T has been very poor for last 3 years in the area from Eldridge Pkwy. at Memorial Dr., going West to highway 6, going South to Westheimer, East back Eldridge Pkwy. Service with new GSM phone is also Below Average where I live in area of Memorial Dr. at Country Place Dr. (77079). Two (2) of ten (10) calls are droped at my home. I may need to pay off my contract. I been with them since they were Prime Co back in 1999.
