Verizon

5 Out of 5 (5 stars) | 45th and Duval, Austin, TX 78751 |

I use my phone a lot and I never have problems with Verizon. I never drop calls. Data speeds are very fast. Verizon just upgraded Austin to XLTE which gets 65MB down. Regularly I am in the 20-30 range on downloads. During SXSW, I never have issues like I did when I had Sprint or AT&T with calls and texts not going through. Verizon is expensive but you get what you pay for. I tested Spring and T-Mobile for a week each on an iPhone 5s in Austin in 2014 before renewing with Verizon. Sprint had a lot of issues with their network. Calls would drop. Data would drop out altogether. I would show LTE and yet have a speed under.5MB. I am sure in time this will improve as they work out their network issues. T-Mobile was a different experience. Their 4G was fast (4-9mb) and their LTE, when you could get it, was similar to Verizon (15-20mb down). I only dropped one call with them and the experience with them was mostly positive unless you were inside bigger buildings. Tmobile's spectrum does not penetrate as deeply into to buildings due to operating at a higher frequency in the spectrum. Verizon bought up a huge chunk of the low frequency on the spectrum which penetrates buildings better. What does this mean for you? Maybe your phone won't show service if you are in a ball or in a big office building on Tmobile. Is this a deal killer? No, not for most people. All of this said, T-Mobile offers free (2G) data and texting when abroad, no contracts, no carrier locking, deals on rate plans, and unlimited data. This is really a hell of a deal. T-Mobile also did some smart things with the building of their 4G network that gives them high data speeds all over. Their LTE is showing a lot of early promise as well in the rollout. T-Mobile rolling out calling over wifi with iOS8 for iPhone will also make them even more competitive. I would love this feature in my home or when I am overseas. When it came down to my decision, I was weighing between Verizon and Tmobile. T-Mobile is are also a tremendous deal if you bundle together with family and we do this. Verizon can also offer you deals, but it never includes unlimited data anymore. I decided on Verizon because I wanted a service that worked where ever I was or my parents were. Also, Verizon just released their XLTE network which is blazingly fast and greatly increases their available bandwidth in all of the launched markets. I lament about Verizon at times due to the cost but it is the most reliable network by far.

I was under the impression, that when I bought my iPhone 5 I could occasionally use it. I now have a very expensive paper weight and a means of raising my blood pressure instantly. The service is worse than I've experienced with any other carrier ever, and I will be switching soon. I honestly don't see how Sprint is even a major phone company with this kind of coverage. I'd say 1 / 5 calls go through, and those aren't always audible. Seriously seriously disappointed.

I have been experiencing dropped calls and trouble sending text messages. It seems no matter where I am in Austin I am almost always roaming. Thank goodness for wifi! Otherwise I would get absolutely no use from my iphone5! I am paying for LTE, why isn't it ever available???

SpeedTest.net reports 0.07m (70k - modem speeds) up and down and more than a second of latency on ping. Signal fades in an out and is basically unusable.

very bad reception in this area texts won't go through most of the time, dropped calls, data plan unusable. I wish I checked the phone reception before moving in this area. Now I waste time everyday because I have to resend texts multiple times before they go though. It's really frustrating. It seems to be all operators as my friends with other operators have similar troubles

Note: This review is for AIO, which apparently is owned by AT&T. Service is excellent, both for calls and data. However, there is NO tethering plan, so data must be used ONLY with the cell phone. I've tried virtually all the other carriers in Austin - Sprint, Verizon, and TMobile. They are all a joke. However, the moment someone introduces a decent service with tethering I will be gone from AIO.

cell service good downtown and decent at my house in cedar park. I ride the metrorail every day and service simply doesn't exist in much of east Austin and west of I-35 until I get north of crestview station / n Lamar. service is really solid at Kramer and Howard stations and spotty at lake line. are other folks experiencing no service in east Austin?

It's hard to say what average is, because all the carriers have problems. Acceptable? Barely. At home I have ok coverage, with occasional dropped calls and moderate quality. Around town, even on I35 going between Austin and San Antonio, I drop a lot of calls. Texts over take quite a while to come through on the phone. Usuable? Yes. Great? Far from it.

Switched from AT&T to Sprint. Had dropped calls constantly on AT&T and have not had a dropped call yet with Sprint in 9 months. Their service is phenomenal. I have 3G between Austin and Houston the whole way, with at least 4 bars for most of it. I always was stuck on EDGE with AT&T outside of the city. And our bill is a lot cheaper.

The reception is poor to no reception. All calls get dropped constantly. Thought ATT pride themselves on having good area coverage however that is not the case if you are around the triangle area. Austin is a big City this is not the countryside and it is almost imposible to make or receive a phone call if your carrier is ATT wireless around this area. Time to move to another carrier.
