Have used Verizon since they first started as Primeco over 10 years ago. Now use PagePlus, who resell exactly the sameVerizon network coverage for less than half the contract price! Strongly recommend you avoid Pageplus customer service by buying through a major dealer, such as Kitty Wireless. Either Verizon or their MVNOs such as PagePlus or StraightTalk give great coverage with so few problems I can't recall the last one. It just works. Dropped calls are unheard of. LTE signal strong everywhere in Austin.

I've had T-Mobile since 2002 (Voicestream back then) and have always had superior service to the majority of my friends who all followed each other to AT&T so that they could pay twice as much every month for inferior service. I'm still baffled that Steve Jobs allowed Apple to become AT&T's little daughter for 2 freaking years when the I-phone first came out. Most dropped calls and slow moving internet complaints still come from friends and family stuck with AT&T.

No problem with reception. Just wish that Verizon customer service did not suck so badly. Whenever I go into a Verizon brick / mortar location I fell like I've stepped onto a used car lot. No one seems to know the products and forget about trying to get a faulty phone fixed. It's always sell, sell, sell. If I could guarantee reception with another carrier I would kick Verizon to the curb.

AT&T

They sold us on the MI-Fi connectivity for our computers and it has been a horrible device. I have had to order three in ten months time. We are rural so now we are going with Hughes which is a satellite.

In the last few months phone and data reception have dropped substantially. Now get dropped calls and no data service in places which had no problems in the past. I have been a customer for 12 years and am now looking to leave Sprint. Sprint will give you a 4G Lte map that shows the whole west side of Austin having 4G Lte, but on our Iphone 5 other than occasional momentary flashes of 4G Lte (not usable)as I drive 620 there is no 4G Lte. When you contact Sprint they provide excuses but nothing changes.

Just sitting here looking at my phone I have 3 to 5 bars. I went with Sprint 10 years ago because they were the only service that worked well in this area. I have never considered changing my provider until recently. Drop calls, no service available, and slow internet has increased exponentially the past few months. I talked with folks with other providers and they are having similar problems. Customer service has no explanation except age of phone (2 years) or not up to date (it is). Been wondering if suns magnetic field reversal is causing the problems. Sounds a tad bit bizarre, but solar flares, etc. does affect atmosphere. Bottom line, none of them are perfect. Maybe if the providers focused on a cell phone being a cell phone and not more then that, they would improve.

I had AT&T for a while and the service was good but cost was too high. Decided to switch over to Sprint because it was substantially cheaper. Now I know why they are so cheap. Coverage is horrible for both phone calls and data. The data is slower than watching paint dry if you can even get data. I am now looking at Verizon because AT&T is still priced too high.

I just moved to Austin and at my home down in Circle C we have a decent signal outdoors, but only a single bar inside our house. When at work in downtown Austin, I actually have no signal at all, there's an X over the bar icon. Until Sprint implements the 800Mhz band for 4G, their service will continue to be unusable in my opinion

It's hard to say what average is, because all the carriers have problems. Acceptable? Barely. At home I have ok coverage, with occasional dropped calls and moderate quality. Around town, even on I35 going between Austin and San Antonio, I drop a lot of calls. Texts over take quite a while to come through on the phone. Usuable? Yes. Great? Far from it.

I agree with comment below. Reception in Barton Hills is pathetic lately. This is pretty poor for a neighborhood so close to a downtown city.

What has happened to Sprint reception? In the last few months, I can't hold a conversation anywhere near my home. I am going to have to switch providers or never use the phone. I will be calling Sprint to try to rectify the issue... if I can get a signal long enough.

Lots of hill where I live. 2 bars inside. I work at UT and inside my building it is 2 bars at best. Not sure if any other provider would be any better.

I've had Sprint for the last 10 years living in the same house. A year ago we started getting numerous dropped calls and Sprint offered us an Airave which worked fabulously. In the past couple of months, we understand Sprint did an "upgrade" in the area and now we get no signal in a 4 block radius of our home on our cells and our Airave no longer gets a signal. After being a long-term customer, we are looking at changing our carrier.

Verizon

Verizon LTE was good in the area, and along the bus route up South Congress to UT campus. Never experienced delays when browsing the internet, downloading apps, or using navigation. Calls were clear, crisp, and loud. I cannot say the same thing for Sprint. Using the same model phone on Sprint, my calls were consistently dropped inside my apartment, and I often heard an echo of my own voice or the other caller's voice would be muffled. Only drawback to Verizon is the high cost of data. Looking for decent 4G data speeds in Austin. I'm going to try T-Mobile next.
