4 Out of 5 Verizon

South Congress | Stassney, Austin, TX 78745

Verizon LTE was good in the area, and along the bus route up South Congress to UT campus. Never experienced delays when browsing the internet, downloading apps, or using navigation. Calls were clear, crisp, and loud. I cannot say the same thing for Sprint. Using the same model phone on Sprint, my calls were consistently dropped inside my apartment, and I often heard an echo of my own voice or the other caller's voice would be muffled. Only drawback to Verizon is the high cost of data. Looking for decent 4G data speeds in Austin. I'm going to try T-Mobile next.

What is going on with Sprint? I heard they had 4G LTE in Austin so I got the Note 2 but I am getting an average of less than 1Mb / s in my apartment. In this same area on Verizon, I was averaging 15Mb / s on LTE. With Verizon I felt that their data usage tiers were too low and I was scared I would go over my plan when using 4G in non-WiFi areas, but with Sprint's unlimited I don't think I could even hit 2GB at these low data rates.

3 Out of 5 Verizon

Baranoff Elementary School on Gatling Gun In Shady | Frate Barker Rd., Austin, TX 78748

My phone hasn't been on contract for three years. It's almost 5 years old; no longer supported by Verizon; they don't even sell batteries for it anymore. About 3 months ago the phone started breaking up - dropping parts of words every second or two. I thought maybe going with a new IPhone would be a good idea, but if I do, after reading this forum I'm definitely not going to change carriers since Verizon has always provided average-to-good reception virtually anywhere I go, nationwide. However, the dark side of me wonders if Verizon is intentionally making system changes to support newer models, that cause older phones like mine to perform more poorly... this would only adversely affect a small set of existing customers with 'ancient' phones, and could very likely drive them back into Verizon stores for a new phone and a new contract.

Very unhappy with my AT&T service:( no reception at my house or very poor when I get sporadic reception. I would be willing to put a cell phone tower on our property! I wish someone would contact me about that! 512944-3837

I've had ATT for a few years bc of contract. Almost never have I been able to make a call from home (area indicated). If I can, the calls almost always drop, and the reception is horrible. I don't even turn on my cell at the house.

1 Out of 5 AT&T

Montclaire, Rae Dell, Austin, TX 78704

Horrrrrrrible! For the last year in a half (I guess this is when Stinkular took over)? Unfortunately, I renewed contract with them, because they said it was likely because of my old phone, and I was up for a new one. It definitely was not. Then they say "oh, were working on our towers, change sim card" ect... Total B / S. I had a friend that worked for them, and that is what they are forced to say. Drops every call. Have to be outside, but even then, garbled and drops. Customer service keeps transferring me between departments, then drops the call. They make it impossible to get any help. PLEASE Barton Hills Peeps (especially down in the hilly area around Montclaire / La Casa / Rae Dell, do any of you have decent service with another provider around here? Let me know. Thanks so much!

Horrible Network, horrible customer service. When I called them and told that I got no reception at my Apt, they said they are not responsible for signal inside the Apartment. When I told them that there is no signal in my Parking lot he started reading bunch of T&C saying ATT may not provide the uninterrupted service and expect this kind of service. My sincere advice dont buy ATT if you are living in Austin. Im shpping for different service provider right now. But I definitely do not recommend ATT to my friend or enemy.

8314 Roan Lane | 290 and Scenic Brook, Austin, TX 78736

Continually drop calls in at my house. Had to purchase a cell range extender that plugs into my broadband. Works well intermittently, and makes calls unintelligible other times. As a home based business, that means all my money goes to sprint, but the vast majority of the traffic is actually supported by my ISP. Good deal for Sprint. Right up until I leave when my contract runs out in about 2 months. Good riddance. Been comparing how various friends' phones work here, and I'm leaning heavily towards Verizon.

5 Out of 5 AT&T

South Congress | Stassney, Austin, TX 78745

I've been a long time AT&T customer. The only time I ever had an issue with service was when the original iPhone 4 dropped. The network got super saturated with new iPhone users and my service was unusable. Apple took the bullet for AT&T saying it was an antennae issue with the new iPhone and sent everyone a free bumper case but magically a month later everything started working just fine and nobody ever spoke about it again... Other than that instance, I have little to no issue with AT&T. Their service is at par or better than Verizon or Sprint in my area. Sure I get the occasional dropped call but it's almost always with the same people which makes me thing it's not me. My current contract has expired leaving me with the freedom to change carriers. I have heavily reviewed my options and am going to stick with AT&T. One reason is I'm grandfathered into unlimited data. But even then, comparing to Sprints Unlimited plan for $99 it's a wash. With AT&T's roll over minutes I never have overages. If I talked more on the phone I suppose this would be an issue but I don't so it works out for me. AT&T is a good value if you know exactly what you need.

With an external antenna at my house, my reception cycles between 1 and 4 bars as the phone jumps from tower to tower. I can rarely make a 3min phone call without a drop. My average download speed test is 7kbps. SPRINT is useless if you plan to use your phone as a Wifi Hotspot to connect to the internet. The speedtest used to be much better at 4:00am, now that is slow.

It really is a mystery to me. I have 0 bars inside my house, and at times 1 bar outside my house. I can drive a half mile away and have 4g. I've complained but no one can come up with an explanation. Other services also have bad service here as well.

1 Out of 5 Cricket

Wier Loop Rd. | Thomas Springs, Austin, TX 78736

I just got Cricket the other day; was very excited about the unlimited plan and free Android phone. I've spent the first three days on the phone with customer service and back and forth to the store, trying to figure out why I can't make any calls at my house, even though I am within the coverage map. The roaming signal always appears too. I have no problems with the phone "in town" but out here, it's terrible! The customer service people are aggravating and keep asking me to reprogram my phone, even though I've already done it 10 times! Even when I sit outside or walk out into the front yard, the reception is still poor; people can't hear me and I can't hear them, and a simple conversation takes much longer than it should.

Quinlan Park | Bright Sky Overlook, Austin, TX 78732

T-Mobile here in Steiner Ranch is horrible! Coverage is poor and with the HTC HD2 which is a pretty crappy phone to begin with service is virtually non-existent. Multiple calls to T-Mobile and they claim they are "checking their network." Always comes back the network is "fine." Then what the heck is the problem??? Replaced the phone with the same model once and it is still horrible. I just want out of the contract and credited for the numerous dropped calls!

Manchaca Rd. | William Cannon, Austin, TX 78748

AT&T refuses to admit their bad service is the reason that I am on my 4th phone. I take care of my phone. It has a protective rubber cover and gets put into another case when I put it in my purse. Calls locally here in Austin get dropped, and calls to Houston also get dropped regardless if I am inside or outside. I try to dial a number and it drops the call before it ever starts ringing on my end. Today I called downtown Austin and the person on the other end told me he couldn't understand me because I was breaking up so bad. The closest cell phone tower to me is at 4301 Slaughter (5.4 miles), and 4525 IH 35 South (7.2 miles). I feel lucky if I can get in touch with my sister whose house is only 4 miles away from me.
