Verizon

Verizon by far has the best coverage and very very good sound clarity, typical to CDMA. Something none of the GSM providers has to offer. I get excellent reception (and not just reception, sound quality as well) pretty much everywhere in Ausitn: downtown, south, all of Mopac, I-35 and Loop 360. Too bad their phones are ancient, they are like 3 years behind in features, compared to the offerings from T-Mobile and Cingular. They even disable Bluetooth on a few rare models that have it...

Cingular totally sucks in Austin! Do not get it unless you want a constant hassle. I live right downtown and I have to stand in my yard to make or answer calls. All around town, it drops calls and Cingular will do nothing to fix it. I am about to switch to T-Mobile because they were rated best by Consumer Reports while Cingular was rated the worst cell company in America. They also have 1500 minutes at $40 per month vs. only 500 with Cingular. Cricket is even better, but they don't have that here yet, it's unlimited minutes for the same price. Cingular is so bad, they are charging me $150 to disconnect even though they admit they have few towers and poor reception in Austin. I'll probably file with the BBB abd FTC, but avoid the hassle and just use another carrier.

Alltel is really spotty around town. It's either excellent or atrocious. I get zero bars in my apartment, and likewise when I'm in a downstairs bar downtown. But otherwise it's usually very good. I have solid service pretty much everywhere.

Cingular has been great most places I go, except at home where I need it the most. We dropped our land line and went with the Cingular family plan but reception in the house is iffy. We can usually call out and recieve calls but the sound is not clear and we have expeirence dropped calls. I went as far as to get a repeater from Fry's (Wireless extender YX-500-PCS) but it would only work when we were on a digital signal, which was only part of the time. I took it back but I have been thinking about getting a more expensive model that works on the 1900 and 850 signal (PowerMax DA4000SBR $400 on ebay). I am waiting because we heard from a friend that the tower at William Cannon and West Gate is not turned on and that it will be in April 2006. I don't know if that is right or not but I am going to wait till April and see what happens.

After replacing the Motorola V600 with the black Motorola V3 from Cingular, reception out of the box the reception is 5 bars. I did notice that after several days of heavy usage, the signal would drop down to three bars, and sometimes two bars, but this was remedied by simply turning off the phone, taking out the battery and the sim card and holding the end / power button for approximately 30 seconds and then reinserting the sim card and then the battery and restarting the phone. As for overall performance, the phone itself has withstood several drops as well as some soda being spilled on the phone. These occurrences have not affected the phone or reception at all with the exception of the above mentioned problem. For being a former AT&T Wireless customer that was bought with the merger of AT&T Wireless and Cingular, I was extremely dissatisfied with the performance resultant of that merger since the two seperate networks often clashed for dominancy and I got stuck out in the cold. This has been completely fixed since now I have had very good performance with the new Cingular Network.

I get decent reception while "out and about" in Austin. Reception sucks in my apartment building and I have to go outside to answer or dial out. No reception driving to work on Southwest Parkway. Spotty reception at work (Lake Travis High School) but still useable. Great reception while visiting relatives in Houston.

T Mobile works fine around the country but not at my house. Also had poor reception with ATT after their switch to GSM network. poor choices for folks in Zilker Barton Hills may try Sprint next

I live within 2 blocks of this intersection. My phone doesn't ring and goes straight to voice mail. To talk on the phone I have to walk out into my back yard and stay there until I'm done talking. I checked cell towers and there are none in the area! Take a look for yourself. There are none in Rollingwood or the eastern part of the Westlake Hills area. This is an upscale area with sophisticated, tech saavy, residents who are unable to access service from home. AT&T wasn't any better, nor was their digital service. Let's get some towers up in the area now! How about one of the rooftops at the new retail / office site at Edgewood and Bee Caves Rd? They've already altered the natural landscape there. There's even a Cingular retail site in the complex! I wonder if they have to step outside to talk on their phones...

When you turn off enfield going north on the old part of windsor, you don't lose the call most times but for about a half of mile, you just hear a garbled voice and have to keep saying "hold on". Enfield between Lamar and Mopac is pretty spotty also.
