We lived in Burbank for a while and had great Verizon coverage. The moved to Van Nuys / Sherman Oaks area and Verizon was bad. They let us out of our contract early. So we got iPhones and AT&T. From dec 09 to may10 we had stellar service. Rarely a failed call. Tons of bars most of the time. Sometime in May, coincidentally when Apple announced the new iPhone, we started getting failed calls and very poor service especially indoors. We even tried that AT&T m cell tower but are returning it due to it shutting down our server off and on all day. And so we started quizzing anyone we knew who used the iPhone and every person we talked to said starting just before the summer they had mostly crappy service especially in their houses. From Pasadena to woodland Hills and in between. Anyone way to start a class action suit?

I have the iPhone 4G and have had all the other iPhones and some Sony phones. I have never gotten good reception on any of them in Studio City, where I live. Likewise, service is equally poor in all of Burbank, CA. At home, I now use Skype. It works but it really isn't right that AT&T service is so bad especially in an area with such a large population density.

I don't have an iPhone. I have the LG Vu from two years ago. Not the best phone. I am going to upgrade this year, but probably to an Android... and I'm not sure which carrier yet. I have my phone set for 2G / Edge access only for two reasons. One, I get double the battery life and two, I get better reception. I normally get 5 full bars on AT&T's 2G / Edge. When I stay in the same area and switch to 3G... my reception drops to 2 or 3 bars. I have had times where my phone lost signal completely during a call when I don't move the phone. It happened more often during holidays, so it could be a congestion issue. My gf has Sprint and the only reason I wouldn't switch over to that is because when we go out on vacation... it's good to have two different providers so that it increases our odds of at least one of us getting signal. If you're having problems with AT&T signals or battery life... try to switch your phone to 2G / Edge if you can. If you're just reading emails or browsing the web, there's not that much of difference in speed that I notice. Switch back to 3G when you need the speed for YouTube or Internet Radio or something like that. Biggest downside to 2G / Edge is you can't talk on the phone while browsing the web... though I don't think you can do that on Verizon's 3G anyway.

My iPhone 3Gs drops calls repeatedly in my apartment.

I really believe that Sprint is in all out campaign to force everyone on an old plan to a new phone / new higher monthly fee plan. Poorer reception, millions of minutes you didn't use, whatever it takes...

My cell phone is my only phone. I need to be able to rely on it. I got it to replace my landline many years ago. Don't remember having quite as much trouble when I lived in West L.A. (before Cingular merged with AT&T), but then I moved to Sherman Oaks and have lived here since Dec. 2007. Reception has always been fair at best, but now it's completely non-existent. Late 2009, I was having to go outside and down block to get even 1 or 2 bars; now my message says "No Network Available." What the heck is going on?? Went to AT&T store, rep was very nice, but she thought replacing SIM card would do the trick. No luck. Worth saying I do get a little reception around Van Nuys / Magnolia, but the cutoff point for me is one block west (Kester / Magnolia). Phone immediately goes to zero. I'm SO frustrated right now - locked in contract till Jan. 2011, and of course, the rep pulled up the coverage map and said, "Oh, it looks like you should be getting great coverage." Yeah, right. If it takes cutting my losses with a term. fee, I will, but they should let me out. How is it right to pay $50 a month for no coverage? Ridiculous!

After seeing all the comments I guess it is AT&T, not necessarily my phone. Most of my calls at home get dropped. No signal at Mission College in Sylmar, where the future consumers of America are learning. Learning that AT&T sucks. So many places, so few bars. I looked at the comments on Verizon, and they at least have some good ones mixed in with the bad (I think angry people are more likely to comment). For AT&T they are all bad. And so many more recent comments. Just waiting out my contract, then b-bye AT&T!

Verizon works the best in this area for sure! Sprint and AT&T suck. I just switched to Verizon yesterday from Sprint because of dropped calls and poor service. Verizon is a beast here.

I never had any problems with Sprint. Then I moved two blocks away from where I used to live and WHAM! No more reception. I have NO reception in my new apartment whatsoever. The really strange thing is that the reception in surrounding areas while I'm driving have suddenly gone way downhill too. I never used to have any dropped calls. Now I have them multiple times a day. It's a nightmare. I do not have a land line and I used my cell phone for work so this is a HUGE problem. I've spoken with Sprint about this repeatedly and they give me the most ridiculous advice such as "try turning your phone off and then back on." Are you kidding me? They have also suggested I buy a new phone (so naturally I'll be locked into a new two-year contract) or purchase additional equipment from them that "should" help the problem. Really? You fail to give me good service and the solution is for me to spend even more money with you? My contract is up in July. I will obviously NOT be renewing it with them. I can't wait to get out!
