WHAT KIND OF RECEPTION CAN I EXPECT

Sprint
Very poor reception that cuts out completely sometimes. Several peoe have reported to Sprint over several months but no improvement on this campus of over 11,000 people. College staff are advising new students to switch carriers before coming here.

T-Mobile
T-mobile didn't used to suck so bad, now it's a f'n joke. Never received calls txts in: Haight, mission, sunset inner and outer, ccsf, downtown. I was unable to buzz people into my apt. with the newer phone intercom system because the signal was so weak. Customer service is the normal sorry we can't do anything to help you, crazy fees, no service. I'm happy to have left them and AT&T behind. I'm never signing a contract again. My advise pay full price for a iPhone and get a month to month. It's what I have now good service way cheaper.

Verizon
Why must I purchase a range extender to be plugged into my Comcast Network for my phone to work? If I get unacceptable service shouldn't the network device be provided, at least if they want to retain existing customers and not offer some ridiculous deal to lure us back in the future. Seems like a very shortsighted business practice.

T-Mobile coverage map shows excellent coverage in the Presidio of San Francisco. They clearly have not visited the area. Service sucks.

AT&T
Connectivity is quite poor, and sometimes drops entirely. My apartment is in the 2nd floor, and reception at the ground level is no better.

AT&T
Constant dropped calls. Barely audible by anyone. Texting is fine. But attempts at utilizing the internet are nearly impossible via my phone. I am required to sit or lay in one spot in my apartment, otherwise I lose reception. It is HORRIBLE. When I leave my neighborhood, all calls work fine. Even in different cities. Never had problems with my AT&T until I lived here.

Verizon
I have almost no reception inside or outside my house. I was told by technical support that I was in a marginal area. I was told I could purchase a device for $250 that might help. All the maps provided by Verizon show that reception was good in my area.

AT&T
I can only have a phone call in one part of my apartment, and the calls get dropped frequently.

After a service call, Verizon has admitted to "marginal service" on my street. The answer: buy a network extender for $249. What? I have to pay for your crappy service?

T-Mobile
Chose T-Mobile years ago because a) it works in and around my home, and b) customer service is quite good. Thinking of getting an iPhone when T-Mobile offers it, supposedly in 2013.

AT&T
Terrible service next to window or at the street corner. iPhone5 has 1 less bar in general than 4S. Very upsetting to have zero bars 95% of the time.

Reception is not consistent on the VA campus. My office area has poor to non-exixtent coverage.

Few problems with AT&T in my apt and general area - it is once I get to civic center / hayes valley when I no longer have a signal.

Sprint
Dissapointing data speed, never more than 3 bars at home and I live near a tower too, I happen to pass by the tower everyday to get to work.

Cannot make calls from inside my apartment - they might connect, but drop immediately. I have to go outside to use my phone. It's not a great situation.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile is useless inside my apartment building. i'm extremely disappointed. Sprint and AT&T both work inside my apartment but T-Mobile is the worst. Zero bars. T-Mobile's coverage map lies.

AT&T
I can't receive or make calls from my home or anywhere within a three block radius... maybe more. I live at the bottom of two hills. I can sometimes see that I've missed calls. But often, the calls don't even show up as missed calls until the next day. I can get texts -- sometimes, but often have to try multiple times to successfully send a text from my home. ATT's customer service people have recommended that I purchase an ATT proprietary device that's supposed to improve my reception in my home. Seriously???? I should pay to fix their poor coverage problem? I already pay $150 / month for this rubbish service. I've just been waiting for my 2-year contract to end so I can leave ATT. I'm shopping for another provider. Friends of mine who use Verizon seem to be able to make calls from my house. But I'm exploring all the options. I would gladly switch to T-Mobile or Metro GPS or Virgin -- though I hear that they too have poor reception in San Francisco. Suggestions?

T-Mobile
I have travelled around the world with my Nokia E63, utilizing about 10 networks in 3 yrs. I have had no unusual problems with it until moving to San Francisco 4 months ago. In Seattle (even as recently as 2 wks ago), my T-Mobile service works fine. In SF, tons of call drops, clipped voice transmission (sending), clipped or absent text messages (sending), wildly oscillating signal strength which will drop to zero in downtown SF for as long as 15-20 mins at a time, then magically reappear at 5 bars. Extremely frustrating and I've both called and visited cust. service and still, no solution.

Sprint
Sprint has been wonderful for the past two years I had my phone with them, all of a sudden their was no service at my house or anywhere in the back of the valley. I used to get coverage everywhere in this little town and now I never see the bars anymore. I called up Sprint one day and I get different problems from all of them; one person will tell me that their upgrading to 4g LTE and service will be disrupted. I will believe it when I see it and other people tell me we never got serive in pacifica their no towers! What? come on I had service a month ago so now for five week I have had no service at my house but they still expect me to play the bill. Sprint clams on its website its new locations for 4g has been announced but none of those locations list pacifica at all. The 4g that they even mention coming to the bay area is 4g wimax,(an old service that Sprint is still trying to provide but one two phones use that old service so what is the point). I switched from AT&T to Sprint because of it outages but this Sprint outage is worse and its not even getting fixed from what I know of, WTF?????

On the third floor Ill get 1 or 2 bars, though its chopping and conversations are difficult. One the 1st or 2nd floors, I get no signal at all. where my Verizon work phone has no issues at all.

I consistently get a few bars that I refer to as "phantom" bars because while they appear as bars on the phone, I'm unable to maintain any phone conversations at all.

The MetroPCS signal at the Brisbane Marina is at best 2 bars.

I live in the Aldea UCSF housing complex (across the street from the sutro tower). T-Mobile coverage absolutely sucks here. I have tried it with multiple phones (Nokia, Samsung) and there are 0 bars up here. I do get 1 bar when the phone is stationary in 1 corner of the house but as soon as I pick it up.. 0 bars. My wife's AT&T service seems to work ok (1-2 bars consistently). Closer to UCSF T-mo does get 1-2 bars but in quite a few spots coverage is absolutely ZERO. AT&T works better closer to UCSF too. Switching over my T-Mobile to VZW.

MetroPCS
As of last Saturday, Oct 20th, 2012, Metro PCS had no reception (zero bars) in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in San Francisco - Nob Hill, home of the Fairmont Hotel. No voice. No data. To verify if the problem was just with my phone, I spoke to my Taxi driver, who also had Metro PCS service. He said that this was a known problem for the area. Today, Oct 22th, 2012, I found no reception - zero bars at the University of San Francisco (USF) Campus on Turk by Cole streets. A low bar count is disappointing but zero bars - no service at all - is extremely frustrating. I visited a company owned Metro Store today and received no help nor any explanation about this problem. I am considering switching if this continues.

Get coverage in most of the top floor of the house, but not over the entire house... most notably the office.

AT&T
According to AT&T's map we are supposed to have the best cover ever and on LTE however I have no bars at all inside my office and I sit next to window. When I do have bars outside is wavers from fine to so slow I cant do a thing. My Neighbor has Verizon and has 3 bars. Go figure. I talked to AT&T about it and basically I am convinced that they could careless about their customers.

Sprint
I have had this phone for 6 years and the service was always great however over the past year it has gotten so bad it has basically become unusable. I have recently switched to the CDMA PTT device and has been much better (great features on the phone too). Only complaint is they keep going out which renders the phone useless. Hope they get their act together.

Map of towers is not consistent with the coverage map on T-mobiles website. I am changing my provider because reception has gotten worse over time.

T-Mobile
I've had T-Mobile since February 2006. I've been satisfied with it until a few months ago when the service signal deteriorated - rapidly. Suddenly I am no longer able to make calls from my home - if I go outside to a far corner maybe I can converse and even then I have to ask people to repeat themselves because there is static noise or the sound just disappears intermittently. It continues to get worse - recently (when I was especially relying on being able to communicate!) there was no signal at all for 10+ minutes (the phone couldn't even "update" the time.)

I just moved to this neighborhood. It's nice and quiet but hilly, so I get really crappy reception in my house. Even with my Wifi on, the calls cut out a lot and drop 1 out of 5 times. Looking for another carrier that has good / great reception in my area. : /

just unexceptable. since when did carriers not care for the city that has become the battleground and in the spotlight for all smartphone companies.

METROPCS re-aim your towers. There is no 4G or regular MetroPCS in Sausalito even though it is the most visited City in the Bay Area. C'mon

Reception in this location is poor for Sprint and AT&T. Calls can only be made by the window and often drop even then. I used to have T-Mobile which performed average to good in this location (with occasional dropped calls).
