AT&T

I live in a "flatter" area of SF and my reception has been consistently good with both Cingular and the former AT&T Wireless GSM.

TDMA service is failing fast. Usd to have good reception here and area, now spotty. Also becoming a problem in mid-town Palo Alto.

The reception here is very limited and at times, not at all. Poor customer service, as well sales people who attempted to overcharge me for a new phone. Not impressed!

Very poor reception. Seems to have gotten worse over last few months.

I haven't yet found an area in San Francisco where my Spring mobile phone doesn't work.

People tend to report the places where they can't get reception. This may be useful, but if you are looking for a system that does work the information is not complete. There are antennas not listed on the map near the intersection of Ralston and Alameda for Cingular, Sprint and T-Mobile. I have Cingular and am close to the antennas. Surprise! Reception is great. Metro PCS has one just a couple of blocks West on Ralston; can't speak for service from it, but considering Metro PCS's reputation I suspect that reception is unusually good here! Verizon might (untested) be a bit worse here; no local antenna located in this area. Cingular generally works pretty well in the area after the acqusition of ATT; former ATT GSM phones work better, too.

Lose signal completely from Crestview to just before Alameda. Need to wrap up call and wait for 2 bars - 1 bar means nothing to Cingular

Verizon's reception on campus has always been iffy, but up until about six months ago, you could make and receive calls with much higher probability. I often got a signal that indicated "extended network" which means they had an agreement with other carriers. They must have dropped those agreements, since I now have zero reception in Building 120 (McClatchy Hall). When I inquire about this, however, no one at Verizon will admit anything.

Get good reception (3-5 bars) everywhere except for the basement of Gates and, mysteriously, the dining hall in FloMo. Have had ~1 call drop in 1.5 years. Reception seemed better before merger of AT&T with Cingular (I originally signed up with AT&T), but it's still pretty good.
