Inside our house we seldom get phone reception though strangely enough the phones will ring when someone calls us. Sometimes the phones will work if we sit by the front door or window. Sometimes they will work if you go out in the front yard or across the street. Seems to be affected by wind. We definitely need a new cell tower somewhere on the CSM campus for this whole area! In other areas we generally have no problem with coverage. Just a note: when I had Nextel, it did not work at all on 101 going north between Cloverdale and Crescent City. When travelling from there to Grants Pass, Oregon it would only work again on the outskirts of Grants Pass. It did not work either at the Marin / Sonoma county line. Hope someone develops a cheap satellite phone real quick!

AT&T

My phone VERY occasionally but not very often gets reception inside the house. I have to go out to the backyard or the street, and it is sometimes but not always better. The phone is a TDMA and I was with AT&T before it got acquired by Cingular. Although it's an older phone, I think the problem is AT&T / Cingular because I also lived in two places in Menlo Park in the last 4 years (Menlo Oaks and Mills St. near El Camino Real) and had the same issues with the then-new phone. Our friend who has the Motorola RAZR through Verizon gets reception in our house.

Verizon

1 Out of 5 (1 star) | Page Mill Rd. | Porter Dr., Palo Alto, CA 94304 |

Reception is often very poor in the office building here: dropped calls, choppy sound, frequent switches to analog, etc. I usually have to go outside to make or receive calls. Verizon is much better in neighboring towns, or even in other parts of Palo Alto. I have heard that in this particular area, it is crippled by Cingular's monopoly on cell towers on the Stanford campus, a block away.

T-Mobile

1 Out of 5 (1 star) | Bridge Parkway, Redwood Shores, Redwood City, CA 94065 |

T-Mobile coverage sucks in Redwood Shores. Please put more towers in! When I bought my phone, the T-Mobile shop said they were going to shortly and they have not 4 months later.

Nextel

5 Out of 5 (5 stars) | Grand Ave., South San Francisco, CA 94080 |

Great reception. I think Nextel has the best quality as voice goes, maybe not the best reception in all locations, but I have tried many carriers and some are really bad such as T-Mobile. You get for what you pay for basically. Loved AT&T before merger with Cingular. It was the best!

T-Mobile

5 Out of 5 (5 stars) | Medical Center, Stanford, CA 94305 |

Very strong GSM reception around the Stanford Medical Center, mainly due to the hospital's contract with Cingular / AT&T. My old Sprint phone would die when I was 10 feet from the window, but my TMobile and Cingular phones have a strong signal into the stairwells, basement, and inside refrigerated rooms. Signal drops to nil once on campus or near the residence halls.

Garbage. Signal bars dance within close radiuses. 40% calls drop
