T-Mobile

Let's face it, every cell provider has it's problems. I have been with Sprint PCS, Verizon, and Cingular in the past and have experienced terrible billing issues, customer service, and coverage. I am now with T-Mobile, and they also have their problems with coverage. However, no more than the other major players. In addition, their billing and customer service are far superior to the competition, and their rates and plans are far less expensive than Sprint, Verizon and Cingular. I am less frustrated by T-Mobile when I do have dropped calls, etc., because I can always call customer service and get right to an agent, and do not feel like I am paying too much money for faulty service in the process.

The people saying T-Mobile doesn't work on campus are on crack. There's a T-Mobile tower on top of Barrows Hall--one of the taller buildings on campus. The reception around campus is great. (Reception elsewhere in the East Bay is another matter. It's pretty bad in many places.)

I can use my phone in the house, a block off College Ave., most of the time. But it's not great, and sometimes I miss a call. My housemate has Cingular and she says it's even worse.

Coverage on the former Naval Air Station is terrible especially in and around any building. Generally 1-2 bars unless out in complete open in visual sighting of cell tower off Pan Am Road.

Verizon does not have reception in the Hayes Valley of San Francisco.

This is an update to the post I put up on Dec 10, 2005 (seen a few comments below this posting). I kept a careful eye on my reception and found out that my phone only displays a total of 4 bars! So having 3 to sometimes 4 bars at my location is actually above average and good. A friend of mine also has Verizon and his phone only displays a total of 4 bars. So don't be a sucker and fall into the full 5 bar hysteria like I did. I've seen numerous phones with a display of 6 bars with other carriers! How ridiculous! Anywho. My reception as well as my phone are working like champs. No drops, crisp and clear calls even when I was at a Ski resort in Washinton State (Stevens Pass).

TDMA service is OK, better today than one year ago. Plan to keep low cost AT&T plan till TDMA stops working. The closer you are to the water, the worse reception. Considering this is island, service not bad.

Sprint is terrible in this area. Very limited reception and usually drops calls. Can't get any reception with it in Tahoe, but Cingular works.

Nextel is marginally better than AT&T which is what I used to have. I still get dropped calls but can at least reasonably complete my calls 60% of the time, whereas with AT&T it was more like 25%. Nextel sound quality is poor though, lots of static on the other end although I can hear them perfectly.

I am a former ATT / Nokia 3600 user. At this location, in my house, I NEVER had static or dropped calls until about a year after Cingular took over and I began to have frequwnt problems and was told we should migrate to Cingular, had to buy 2 new phones as the ATT ones woldn't work with Cingular... 1 Audiovox SMT5600 and 1 Motorola V620... both had excellent reviews... both get breakup and dropped calls... in my house!
