MetroPCS
Works great in my apartment and elevator.

AT&T
Every single call from anywhere in my apartment breaks up. Either I can't hear them or they can't hear me. Half of my calls are dropped altogether. Sometimes I go outside to use phone but that's not very safe and there's a lot of noise from traffic etc. Appears there are only two towers in all of Oakland and they aren't anywhere near downtown. Wish I knew this before I got stuck with AT&T.

T-Mobile
I have a Nexus 4 on T-Mobile and rarely get more than one bar and often have no coverage when in my home. I also have an iPhone with Verizon and get great reception with that. Verizon is even faster than my WiFi sometimes.

AT&T
Almost all calls are dropped within 5 minutes. Verizon was better a few years ago. I think I might give T Mobile a try now that they are paying money for my Iphone 4 when I sign up and get an I phone 5

Sprint
The only difference at my house between AT&T and Sprint is the sound clarity was better with AT&T. Pretty much the same amount of dropped calls and sound quality is much worse with Sprint.

AT&T is awful in Berkeley. About 50% of calls dropped. Sprint is no better. I get 1 bar at my house.

Cell reception in downtown Berkeley is not that great. What I don't get is how I can get 52mbps download and 20mbps upload while sitting on college ave at chabot rd in Oakland but in downtown berkeley on LTE I get 5mbps download and 0.3mbps upload. Some of this probably has to do with the building I live in but I'm on the 4th floor and there's a cell tower two blocks up the street on Addison and a cell tower at UC campus.

AT&T
On my 3g phone I get mostly only 1 bar (and cycling rapidly between 2 and 3 bars). So many of my calls go directly to voice mail without ringing my phone.

Sprint
Suddenly, my reception has become almost non-existent. No bars is the norm. Occasionally, I get one bar long enough to start a call and get dropped. What is going on??? I switched from ATT to Virgin Mobile (which uses the Sprint network) in the summer of 2012. Reception was great until last week (mid Feb 2013).

AT&T
Constant dropped calls. Barely audible by anyone. Texting is fine. But attempts at utilizing the internet are nearly impossible via my phone. I am required to sit or lay in one spot in my apartment, otherwise I lose reception. It is HORRIBLE. When I leave my neighborhood, all calls work fine. Even in different cities. Never had problems with my AT&T until I lived here.

Barely any reception at all, maybe 1.5 bars. Customer service told me they had a tower in the neighborhood that needed maintenance, but could not say when it would be performed. This was six months ago or more and nothing has changed. I dont know if any other carrier is any better on the island.

T-Mobile
Very bad reception and at times no reception at all. I used to get four bars even by the beach but since 2011 the service has changed. I wonder why the change.

I just switched from ATT to Verizon. Now my phone works in all the areas ATT would not, which is just about everywhere. ATT in the bay area is a world of hurt, don't do it.

Verizon
Very often I don't even get 1 bar. People can't hear me on my phone, and I can't hear them. I can only send a text message if I'm standing right by the window; photo messages require me to stand outside. Last night it took me almost an hour to deposit a check with my electronic bank. I kept taking pictures and getting all the way to the "deposit" option and then I'd get the message that the signal wasn't good enough.I ended up going out into the street to do it. Very safe! I'm also not sure that I'll ever get through to 911 if I need to in an emergency. When my contract's up I'm heading for straight talk. Their service can't possibly be worse than Verison's on Alameda. In fact, I'll probably cancel early as soon as the savings outweigh the penalty. Get any other carrier but Verizon!

I cant say enough of how bad the reception is with At&t. I live by Strawberry Park and I get dropped calls no cells, it sucks. Thankfully my contract is up so I am moving on to Verizon.

Calls almost always drop. I just got 4 days of phone messages on the 4th day. ATT couldn't be bothered to tell their clients that they were not delivering any messages for 4 days. Why not? More cost effective not to. ATT is beyond horrible.

Signal goes in and out comes and goes, lousy ATT I am getting 1.1x Edge speed on 3G which means why bother? - driving down Grand St.off the tunnel the signal Always disconnects. Through iPhone 3G I can barely hear at full volume.

I live in Redwood Heights in Oakland and AT&T is the only good reception. Verizon doesn't work here. My sons live in Berkeley on Alvarado off of Ashby above the Claremont and AT&T doesn't work there.

It is as close to no service as you can get. Nothing but dropped calls. It makes me wish for the return of phone booths. Really, really awful.

Why is there no class action suit against ATT in the east bay? Their coverage map that they show you when you purchase the phone is so far from the truth that it is ridiculous. They know that and will not change the map. They have not added any significant towers in the last 5 years but keep selling phones on a system that was already overtaxed 5 years ago. There is a legal phrase called "reasonable expectation" and ATT has clearly violated that expectation in this area. I have nothing but dropped calls. I can't stay on the phone, and sometimes I can't even call anyone. It seems that I am not alone. Does anyone else agree that this level of service is worthy of a class-action suit?

Stayed at father in laws place for vacation and had the worst reception ever! Dropped calls patchy service. I run spotify off my phone and haven't been able to listen to music consistently the entire trip. Terrible... AT&T needs more towers here. R

The ATT cell coverage is becoming worse and worse in my neighborhood. I have an iphone 3Gs, and I can barely pick up email -- many times I cannot pick it up at all in my neighborhood. It is outrageous that ATT charges as much as they do for practically no service in prime Bay Area neighborhoods. Even when I am at my office on Montgomery St.in SF, the service is very hit or miss for cell or email. What a ripoff? Where are the cell towers?

On the third floor Ill get 1 or 2 bars, though its chopping and conversations are difficult. One the 1st or 2nd floors, I get no signal at all. where my Verizon work phone has no issues at all.
