AT&T

AT&T has terrible coverage in this area of Berkeley. I get between 1 and 0 bars in my apartment. I have to step outside to get 2 to 3 bars and that's the best I can get within a 100 feet of the building! AT&T's customer service rates their coverage as "good" in this area, but they are overly optimistic. Do not go with AT&T if you live in Walnut Square area of Berkeley.

Having been a customer since Cellular One days, I've had pretty good reception with every cell phone with the exception of my new Apple iPhone 3G on ATT's network. A simple 3-4 minute call may require 2 call backs due to a dropped signal. This happens even talking on the phone from the second floor window with 2-3 bars. I'm going to report the poor reception to ATT.

AT&T must have upgraded service in my area starting about 5 months ago or so. When I purchased my iPHone 3G in end of Aug. '08 I had virtually no 3G connectivity at all until around April '09 (can't remember exactly). Then all of a sudden I was getting 4 bars consistently and sometimes 5. When I was experiencing the problem earlier it didn't matter where in my house I was or whether I walked outside, even in the middle of the street; the entire neighborhood had bad connectivity... .now it's all fine.

It's clearly getting worse. When I got the phone three months ago I was disappointed with occasional weak 3G and failed downloads. Then 3G was reduced to occasional 30 second bursts. Now I can't get a bar of E and can't even call my job! Not bad from other locations, just useless at home.

I have used Verizon for about 10 years and have been very happy with the reception and their customer service. I always get a signal inside my house, and usually a pretty good signal at work in downtown Oakland (far from a window). This past summer we drove to Wyoming through Oregon and Idaho, taking back roads most of the way, and were very surprised at how often we had a signal. I was even able to get on the web waaay out in the boonies of eastern Oregon. Amazing!

Service has gone downhill. I wander through my house, phone in hand, searching for a signal. Once upon a time I could call from my car in the underground garage. Then I had to move to just outside the garage. Next it was onto the street in front of the garage. Now it's down the street sometimes, so I drive slowly, searching for a signal.

Reception was terrible for a long time, then got better for a few months. However the past few weeks have been terrible again. No service or one bar at most.

Although I hate the higher pricing of Verizon, I have to admit the reception for me has been pretty close to perfect at our home about midway in on Benevides. Still, I pay way too much. My neighbor has T-Mobile and told me she gets no reception in her house--has to go outside or find a sweet spot upstairs. I borrowed her phone to test T-Mobile in our home next door and I got service all throughout our main floor. None downstairs where my desk is though. Thinking about moving to T-Mobile for the much cheaper rates including texting... as long as I can get calls somewhere in the house!

Extremely poor reception, many, many dropped calls.

Terrible reception. I have to leave my house and walk to a more open area to have conversations on the phone. Even then areas of reception are patchy at best. Even though I love the iPhone, I will replace it with another phone just so I can use a more reliable provider once my ATT contract is up. I would expect this kind of coverage in a developing country or rural area--not the bay area!
