AT&T Wireless (GSM)

I like many people have been getting more insistent $50 credit offers to sign up for another year from AT&T (and of course they won't let you upgrade to a better calling plan without a new commitment either). My Nokia 8265 TDMA gets OK reception, which may go fuzzy in most of my 1/2 basement bedroom, but no problems in most places. I got an offer in the mail for $110 off a new phone (basically free after another $20 mail in rebate) and since I wanted to upgrade to free long distance, free nights & weekends, and 200 more minutes for the same monthly price thought it might be worth the 2 year commitment. Big mistake. This is day one and it's going back tomorrow. It's completely useless anywhere in my house, outside of my house or up the street. No signal at all inside, the phone may have up to 5 out of 7 strength outside and drop to 0 instantly. The service doesn't have the 'hi are you there, OK I can hear you again' during bad signal - it immediately hangs up on you. I attempted to make my first phone call, after redialing 10 times after being hung up on even after walking several blocks this phone is going back tomorrow. If they are phasing out TDMA I will be phasing out AT&T because GSM is unuseable here (and for now they better put my account back the way it was).

On the north side of Belmont, reception is almost non-existent. One the south side, it is average or worse.

Never have a problem with reception with Verizon. Works consistently well.

Coverage is spotty and unreliable. My service and phone are 5 days old, and they only work adequately about 50-60% of the time. I might be on the phone for 10 minutes, then dial up a second call and all of a sudden it's "Emergency Only." Even though I haven't moved physically, all of a sudden the service is out. I just got off the phone with tech support (after an hour's worth of waiting and talking) and the best they could do was apologize and say "I might get a call back."

In Salem, AT&T provided perfect coverage, but ever since I moved to Portland, nothing but dropped calls, poor signal strength and tons of frustration! My contract is up in less than a week and I will be switching to someone else.

When I moved into my new apartment right down the street I didn't know that I would lose all of my reception. I went to the AT&T store and tried a new phone, still no reception. Every one comes to my house with Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cingular with no reception problems at all. Also I work at Intel and receive a discount for AT&T coverage. Isn't ironic that I don't get reception in the parking lot of the Intel campus I work at?

Throughout north Portland, from I-5 to St. Johns, service is downright bad. Areas of particularly poor service include: anywhere on Greeley from the I-5 exit to Lombard; Lombard from Chetaqua(sp?) to Interstate; Portland Blvd. from Greely to Interstate; N. Ida area around Fred Meyer. AT&T should be ashamed of their negelect of North Portland.

Very little or no GSM reception inside most buidings. Absolutely no reception inside the St. Johns Fred Meyers store. New battery lasts less than 24 hrs due to increased power drain (because phone is always boosting weak signal or trying to find a signal). Everyone I know with a GSM AT&T phone who visits North Metro Portland experiences these same problems. I switched from Verizon due to their lack of Bluetooth support, but now I really miss their fantastic coverage (my Verizon CDMA Kerocera worked EVERYWHERE, even basements).

If I'm within 6 inches of my window, I can usually make calls. If not, everything goes to voice mail and I get a notification up to 2 hours later. If I walk a block in either direction, I get 6-7 bars (7 is max on the 6800).

TDMA signal is weak and often drops in my home near South end of John's Landing area, but this otherwise has been a very good service with good coverage. No billing or customer service issues. Works well nationally, in many countries of the Caribbean, in Mexico, and in the puckerbrush of rural eastern Oregon and Idaho.
