I have an old Verizon dumb phone with extendable antenna. I get 2 or 3 bars in this location, and the phone works. My wife's smart phone often does not work when driving through the coast range or other rural areas, while mine still works. So maybe the answer for people reporting such spotty coverage is to get a dumb phone for backup! At least you can still make calls...

Verizon

4 Out of 5 (4 stars) | USA | USA, Oregon City, OR 97045 |

Just some general thoughts. If you travel in the US and drive between major metropolitan areas you will want Verizon. Yes AT&T is now advertising the "Strongest LTE Signal". But that means little when you have fewer towers than your competitor. In layman's terms regardless of signal strength you need to have signals that overlap from one antenna / tower to the next to avoid dropped calls. Think of it as people with open umbrellas. If these people covered the USA with the edges of the umbrellas touching there would be few gaps. Essentially what the marketing folks at AT&T are saying is that they have bigger umbrellas. What they aren't saying is that they don't have as many of those big umbrellas and there are many places that their big umbrellas don't touch. So there are gaps in coverage. AT&T's strategy has been different then Verizon's. AT&T focused on major metro areas and less so on the arterials between the metro areas. So if you stay primarily within the city, AT&T will work fine for you. If you like to be mobile, then you should go with Verizon.

I came in to get a new phone at the Tualtin metropcs and I ended taking an extra one for my daughter, this young ladywith such great atitude and personality really knows how to hook you with the right questions and answers. Rosie was really helpful she even helped me set up my phone and transfer my contacts and pictures from my old phone to the new one. and as a plus she gave me 50% of my accessories. I'm glad we still have employees that really know how to treat us customers, and to those employers that know how to find employees like this young lady. I love my service everything unlimited for such cheap price monthly, I Thank you Rosie for the great customer service you have and to Metropcs for having you around like I told you I have been sending you my friends and family members to take advantage of this great deal you guys offer... .. Please MetroPCS keep hiring ladies with such great smile.

Had Verizon then moved to Sprint to save some funds every month. Worked out ok I guess for the first year. During second year Sprint's service was terrible! I paid early termination fee and MOVED TO CRICKET (at&t towers, shhh) I would honestly say better service than both of my last carriers. 5 lines with mixed data $120 that's it no fees!

Often have dropped calls and its hard to have a normal conversation while in my house on the cell. Coverage is also very spotty along Idleman road and I typically lose calls when talking with hands free device in the car aroudn here. Data signal is poor too- the only way I have survived is with a landline in our house and using Comcast wireless for data in our house.

Sprint

4 Out of 5 (4 stars) | SE 52nd and Steele, Portland, OR 97206 |

Just moved here, and tethered from my phone for the first two weeks before internet was put in. The connection speeds were amazing (seriously... it felt faster than my 25mbps connection). Call quality is mixed - it says that it's HD, but it doesn't sound particularly amazing. Overall, though, I'm pretty happy with it.

T-Mobile

Majority of calls drop; others are poor quality. Data is so slow / / who cares that it is unlimited if I can't use it? Just switched from ATT to Tmobile. Planning to attempt a switch back, T-Mobile is horrible.

I've lived in this area for 12+ years and I've never consistently received such poor cell signal coverage / reception. Bought a new phone last year on Verizon's recommendation to try to improve my reception yet I still only get 1-2 bars 3G (both inside and outside). I know Verizon is aware of the problem but I just don't understand why there are still no Verizon towers in this entire area (SW Portland / Tigard). I'm no telecom expert but I'd feel better if there was at least 1 Verizon tower on this side of town or even in Tigard / Beaverton.

Once in a while my phone will work. Mostly however absolutely no bar's at all. Contacts to even get a phone number, works occasionally. Be into T-Mobile store several times. The employees are nice and try to be helpful. But unfortunately this doesn't solve the problems. At times I might get one bar! T-Mobile needs to figure out how to boost their singles. Before I forget can't message at all unless it's through Facebook! Help T-Mobile. :-(

Moved from Verizon to AT&T. I immediately noticed the 4g lte speeds are incredibly slow downtown. While Verizon was slower than AT&T in some areas, like the sellwood area, it was still fast enough for me. Now, with AT&T, the speeds are very slow, it's like I'm on a 3G network when I'm supposedly on lte.

I work on the third floor next to a window. 4G LTE speeds have always been slow, but over the last two-three weeks it's abysmal. I can't even complete an Ookla SpeedTest -- it "times out" after several minutes, with a download speed < 0.5Mbps. That's not a misprint. Less than 1 / 2 a Mbps! My signal strength averages -97 dBm, which isn't great but it's not terrible either. So... a device issue? Unlikely as co-workers with different VZW devices experience the same issue. Too much traffic and network congestion? Perhaps. An actual dead zone? Maybe. I don't really know, but whatever's going on is maddening - especially with the "premium" rates VZW customers pay. *Ironically, both speed and signal strength improve as I move inward, closer to the center of the building.

4 Out of 5 (4 stars) | Beef Bend Rd. | 150th Ave. on Bull Mountain In Tigard, Portland, OR 97224 |

I'm near the bottom of Bull Mountain, on the south side of the hill, facing Sherwood. Signal is generally good, although DATA is sluggish at times. No dropped calls, here. My bill was $177, last month. I would love to get less expensive service, but everyone's comments on here make it sound like VERIZON is the most reliable service, as far as signal strength.

Three years ago I had great service, internet, no dropped calls. Then as soon as AT&T started there greed and wanting to be in Control. AT&T wanted to make sure they had no competitors and could they charged you big time for going over. Verizon is joke too, always charging you for roaming charges along with data overages. Their just as bad as a certain bank ! Every sense to take over Sprint has sucked as far as it goes for phone calls being dropped, messages not being sent and just in general the service has pretty much gone down into the mud !which is a shame because I'd like Sprint. If Sprint wants to keep its customers, they need to get their head out of the mud and start doing something as far as it goes for challenging the greedy suckers and becoming stronger for its customers so I don't recommend Sprint in Washington at all and in many areas of Portland !Because simply its really disappointing to have any type of service that doesn't work well. The customer service is very good !the phone Service 3g &4g service towers needs to be established.

I have had AT&T for 2 years (contract period). I get pretty good service-usually 4 bars. Occasional problem with textx getting stuck. I think AT&T is too expensive, but after reading about other carriers, perhaps I should stay put?

Sprint is the worst As a business person is expect to get LTE in downtown Portland. I've called customer service several times to tell them how I have 1x or no signal. Emails, internet, maps, or any activity is terrible. Was told "towers being upgraded" But wait ! I traveled to San Francisco for business and the Apple campus. I thought to myself "get service here must be great?" But No luck, even in one of the nations most progressive technology cities. Sprint advertises LTE but it's a lie
