Virgin Mobile

Very happy with the Virgin Mobile reception; routinely get 3 bars or more inside my house, never drop or miss a call. Contrast to previous AT&T / Cingular, where we never had even one bar, and had to leave the house and go to the end of the block to check voicemail or make a call.

I still have an AT&T contract. When I got it, 1.5 years ago, had only 1-2 bars at home. There was a sudden increase to full bars when purchased by Cingular. I have had no problems with dropped calls, but could have a clearer connection.

I can be sitting at my home office with the cell phone right next to me and the next thing I know it beeps indicating a message. Phone never rang! It takes at least 3 calls to complete a call with the constant call dropping and at various times I have been told that the automated message that Cingular uses during peak phone usage (8-9AM, 12N and 5-6PM) says my phone has been disconnected. I guess all circuits are busy since we all are trying to constantly call back our parties! Repeatedly visited Cingular store and requested that they check service in area - then called Customer Care and was told all those trips were wasted because "those people are just salespeople". Finally asked to be released from contract - 2 hours on phone standing in their company store and connected to customer care - final result - pay the $150 for cancellation. I said send me a final bill - and when it finally came it did not reflect my last payment and two weeks later they sent me to collection - even though the bill was not yet due!

incredibly frustrating. there seems to be a dead zone from about 30th to 41st on division and between division and hawthone between the amse avenues. seems to be affected by weather, chance and how important the call is. does any provider have good service in this area?

I have little to no reception anywhere in SE Portland. I must pay $200 to get out of my contract. I hear positive things about Verizon but I think I'll stick with land lines for the time being.

Calls are dropped every several minutes even though a constant 3 to 4 bars show, happens whether we are inside or outside the house. Very frustrating it is keeping us from using cell as primary phone for home use, locking us into landline service.

verizon is very good, stay away from Cingular if you are worried about coverage around portland area and beyond.

In the area that I am in, it is a little iffy, I get about 2-3 bars. In my apartment I have to sit in my bed to use my phone. But for any other wireless company it is a pretty crappy area for cell phones... .but other than that Sprint is fantastic!

In general, I've found Sprint PCS reception to be good in the Portland area--partly due to the five-year-old phone, which I've found can pull a signal where the newer Motorolas and Samsungs have nothing--but I just moved and this area and E of 33rd into the 40s and just north of the Alameda ridge seems to be a dead zone. I'm down to one bar and have had lots of dropped calls for the first time. Problem is, the newer phones all seem to have worse reception, which means no signal here. Sprint PCS customer service seems to have gone DOWNHILL after the Nextel merger also, which I didn't at all expect. Verizon is the only carrier I haven't heard complained about in close-in PDX... is it really the only option to aviod dead zones?
