Virgin Mobile

Very happy with the Virgin Mobile reception; routinely get 3 bars or more inside my house, never drop or miss a call. Contrast to previous AT&T / Cingular, where we never had even one bar, and had to leave the house and go to the end of the block to check voicemail or make a call.

I still have an AT&T contract. When I got it, 1.5 years ago, had only 1-2 bars at home. There was a sudden increase to full bars when purchased by Cingular. I have had no problems with dropped calls, but could have a clearer connection.

I can be sitting at my home office with the cell phone right next to me and the next thing I know it beeps indicating a message. Phone never rang! It takes at least 3 calls to complete a call with the constant call dropping and at various times I have been told that the automated message that Cingular uses during peak phone usage (8-9AM, 12N and 5-6PM) says my phone has been disconnected. I guess all circuits are busy since we all are trying to constantly call back our parties! Repeatedly visited Cingular store and requested that they check service in area - then called Customer Care and was told all those trips were wasted because "those people are just salespeople". Finally asked to be released from contract - 2 hours on phone standing in their company store and connected to customer care - final result - pay the $150 for cancellation. I said send me a final bill - and when it finally came it did not reflect my last payment and two weeks later they sent me to collection - even though the bill was not yet due!

I feel like I'm chanelling the Verizon guy: "Can you hear me now?" No, they can't! Reception is fine throughout most of the city but in NE it's almost non-existant. 2 bars on average with a lot of cut outs. It's a joke. I hear Cingular and Verizon are better... they're also a lot more expensive. Good luck!

incredibly frustrating. there seems to be a dead zone from about 30th to 41st on division and between division and hawthone between the amse avenues. seems to be affected by weather, chance and how important the call is. does any provider have good service in this area?

Cingular used to have great reception in downtown Portland, but starting on December 13, a cell tower has been out. Now I can not make any calls or received any. Most of my friends use Cingular and have the same problem (text messages still works sometimes). The customer service agent told me she had no timeline of when it will be corrected and wasn't even aware of the problem until I called. This is the worst service I have ever encountered. They should have at least notified their clients of the problem when it occured and should correct it in a timely fashion.

I have had AT&T now Cingular service for 4 years. Service was good before but has deteriated to almost no service. I have a family plan with three phones. I renewed my contract about a year ago and service has gotten worse and worse. I call the service department and they only want to sell me a new longer contract. I keep my side of the contract up by paying my bill in full and on time. Is there anyway to make a cell phone company hold up there side of the contract by providing the service they agreeded to in the contract. I lose service all over the city. Even at 30th and Sandy. My wife and I joke when we get dropped three of four times on my way home from work that Cingular has decided that 'family time must be up". I seldom turn on my phone at home this way I do not have to charge it as often and do not have to pay for wasted electricity for a service that does not work. I have asked to get out of my contract or for Cingular to provide the service I pay for and they say they do not have to provide the service (event the level I had when I signed the contract and could have gotten out of it by day 14, but it worked then and now it doesn't?) but I do have to pay and there is no way to get out of it. I have not moved and it is not the phone. I have 3 and they work in some places but not others so I know it is the coverage. I am willing to pay for service but I do not think it is accually unreasonable to have it work, at least most of the time. I have been told that the cancellation fee is to pay for the phones. If they are so valuable I will gladly give them back? I understand they need to have customers stay on their service to make a profit but black mail is not the way to do it. Good customer service would work much better. I work for a cable company that does not have contracts and you can cancel anytime you want and we seldom have customers leave because of crappy sevice. I wish Cingular could do the same. I have spent countless hours with their customer service and made many many trips to their stores and service continues to deteriate. Do cell phone companies have any accountability at all? With such poor service a cancellation fee of $525 is completly unreasonable.

I have little to no reception anywhere in SE Portland. I must pay $200 to get out of my contract. I hear positive things about Verizon but I think I'll stick with land lines for the time being.
