AT&T Wireless (GSM)
Used to live downtown and had perfect reception everywhere I went... now that I've moved into SE I literally have to leave my house, and usually the neighborhood to have a decent conversation! I'm so frustrated. Now... do I switch to Cingular and hope reception improves... or shell out $175 and run to TMobile (my sister lives with me and has perfect reception throughout the house)????

Where I work is located where Barnes / Burnside meet, we went with AT&T due to the reception, however now that the GSM's are being fazed out and the TDMA's introducted, the reception in the GSM is garbage. I will more than likely switch myself and my staff over to TDMA. I don't think it will make the reception driving down Burnside, going through the tunnel, etc. any better as there are no cell towers along that stretch.

ATT is worse by far since the "merge" with Cingular! Phones (all 3) all sound like under water, static, with lots of variance in signal strength, even while standing still. All over the Portland metro area. ATT says its the phone, not the tower, but that idea is blown by the fact of using 3 different phones and it happens to all. Everyone (100%) of all ATT users I have spoken with all say service / reception is way worse in last 3-4 months, since the Cingular / ATT merger started... Verizon and Nextel seem to be best all around in this area.

Looking into switching now. I hate it. Plus, people getting a single phone plan get screwed.

Since relocating from the Midwest, we've concluded that our lousey reception and dropped calls must be blamed on the terrain in the Portland area. I've talked to a good number of people with various cell phone plans and providers and no one is satisfied with their reception and of course, the crappy customer service is rampant. We were going to dump our landline at home, but cell phones just aren't reliable enought to count on in an emergency.

Right there as you turn left onto Willamette from Chataqua... Boom! Zero reception! I have to alter my route and drive up Lombard, reception is not great there either.

Reception vacillates constantly. Goes from full bars down to none and the call gets dropped. This has gotten much worse since ATT and Cingular merged. Seems to go on approximately 10 minute cycle, although this is not regular. Basically unacceptable. When Renew time comes we will drop Cingular unless something changes drastically.

I get 2-3 bars out of 5 in the house with the Treo, tower appears to be North of my location. I have not dropped a call yet.

AT&T works off and on out here. I understand there are 3 towers in this area but a few spots are between them - like our house where sometimes we can get service - 2-3 bars, other times we can get 3 bars if we go outside. Nextel worked pretty good here (still some drops), and T-Mobile was similar to AT&T. I gave it average because we are some what rural and I expect the mountains interfere as well.
