Signal strengh is not consistent - it varies from a couple of bars at times to none. It is common to lose signal during a call and be disconnected.

My phone (Motorola Razr M) is new and is 4G ready but the service in my area sucks! My phone only has 1 to 2 bars of service and it will jump from 3G to 4G non stop while dropping calls in between. I've called Verizon who sent out a technician who called me back with the conclusion that "there is just bad service in that area. I had to get Internet through Comcast just to be able to use my phone. It's very frustrating! My roommate has Sprint and never has a problem and always has full bars and has yet to drop a call. That's sad when I have to ask her to use her phone on Sprint Network to make my business call, embarrassing actually. Verizon, feel free to put a tower in the back of my yard for the sake of your customers in our neighborhood, I will be forced to take my business elsewhere if this issue is not resolved!

I dont have a tower close to me that supports 4g. I have made so many calls to tmobile, samsung. I want to know is there a human being in Portland Oregon, that can assist me with this phone. T-Mobile cant, Samsung cant. In other words I have a phone in my house that I cannot use no bars, no 4g, and no connectivity. I am have called at least 15+ times. I cant get this phone fixed, unless I drive somewhere to download a app. This is the worst carrier, I have you for 10 years. The towers around me, only support 2 and 3 g. yes I know you are upgrading from Seattle south, sometime in maybe june I might have service. I dont want a call or response, it doesn't help. I have also talked to a few people around me and they too have been having problems, when their contract expires they are going with another carrier.

4-5 bars most of the time in my area, yet 50% of the time calls are dropped or say "call failed". Text messages are often delayed anywhere from 30 mins to several hours. Pretty bad.

In the Brooklyn neighborhood (near Ross Island Bridge) call reception is good 3-4 bars, but internet is a bit slow inside my apartment. I work on the northwest end of Hwy. 224 and call reception is good 3-4 bars, and internet is pretty fast as long as I'm outside, or near a window. I dog-sit regularly at a house on SE Woodstock and 36th and the call reception is fine outside, but internet is slow and the phone is almost unusable indoors 0-1 bar.

Horrible reception for being on one of the highest hills in town! I have to be in a 2 foot square spot in my kitchen to actually receive calls. Most of the time a call comes in and goes straight to voicemail. I don't even know I've gotten a call until I get the voice mail alert!

0~1 bar inside our house. Barely workable when stepping outside onto the street. We bought a MicroCell - which is down most of the times. Don't bother. Then we installed an omni directional antenna near the tip of a 60+ ft cedar tree, and connected it via a 100ft ultra low loss cable to an amplifier and in-house antenna. Now we can talk inside the house most of the times. I may replace the omni directional antenna in the tree with a directional.

I can reiterate a lot of what other folks have already said about Sprint service in the Portland, OR metro area. I can also speak to service in the Salem / Keizer area. I took my phone in several times for service thinking all the dropped calls (even outside, no buildings involved) were my phone being a lemon. Turns out it has always been my carrier. I have a Samsung Epic 4G. I also think the 4G is a myth, at least in NE pdx. It wastes more battery looking than I've ever used on purpose! Around the house it will look like I have from 1 to 3 bars. I have three right now. I go to make a call, it drops to 0 to 1 bar. My girlfriend in Keizer has Verizon. She never has trouble with her phone. I will be on the phone with her, and the call will drop 1 to 3 times. If we get to three, she is so irritated we're done talking for the night. I don't blame her! It is incredibly irritating to get interrupted by technology 15x / week or more. Drops happen everywhere else locality wise and line-wise too, she is just the one I talk to the most. We go hiking and she has a bar literally in the middle of nowhere in a valley between two mountains! Don't know how Verizon does it. She had to make a call once in the middle of a backpacking trip to the 3 sisters while in the tent! My phone lost reception before the first side-road off the main highway and wasn't useful thereafter except to drain the battery searching. In a nutshell, you will pay more for Verizon, but with things like a credit union discount (10% / month), and combining centurylink if you have it in NE and other parts of PDX, you can totally do Verizon and have the prices comparable or lower than Sprint. Contract is finally done, switching very soon.
